I work in retail, and last night I had an ugly encounter with a mother who came through my line with her two small children. First of all, I don't like this woman or her children, because her kids are a couple of loud little hellions and she doesn't do anything to control them. If anything, she seems to be very permissive with regards to their bad behavior. At one point, when I was checking her out, her 5-year-old son picked up something from off my counter. When I asked him to hand the item to me, she told me not to talk to her kid like that and that if her kid ever picked up anything, I should tell her. Excuse me, but if she had been doing her job in the first place, I wouldn't have had to say anything to her son. Also, parents like her aren't doing their kids any favors, because if they and the other adults around them don't set limits early on, then someone else eventually will, and that someone may very well be a cop. And not only that, but it is the parents' responsiblity to

My daughter just had her 4 year check up and the doctor spoke with her about not talking to strangers. I thought it was kind of strange, considering she's only 4 and obviously isn't out playing alone. But regardless, I decided better to be safe than sorry. Anyway, I was telling a friend of mine about this and she was stunned. She feels that talking about bad things and instilling fear in a child especially that young is wrong. She believes that if you think something bad will happen, it will. That if you don't talk to your kids, they won't be afraid, therefore they won't draw bad people to them.

I agree that I don't want my daughter to be afraid of all people, but I want her to be equipped with the knowledge that most people are good, but some are not. So, we told her that. We told her never to approach a stranger and if someone approaches her to tell them "I don't talk to strangers" and run and find us immediatly.

When did you talk with your kids and what did you say?

About 5 months ago my pregnant wife and I lay down to go to sleep with my 2yr and 4r old daughters asleep upstairs in their beds. Maybe two hours had past and I found myself half awake trying to rub on my wifes leg to initiate some intamacy, however as I began to continue I slowly realized that it was not my wife but my 4yr old that had snuck into my bed inbetween my wife and I. Yikes..I freaked out and almost jumped out of bed. I felt so bad about it even though nothing obscene really happened. I have prayed about it and forgiven myself for it but it is still a constant thought that I dwell on throughout my day. I just can't shake it no matter how much I tell myself it's O.K. Has this ever happened to anyone or does anyone have some advice on how I can get over it?

A teenaged boy spits at me several times a day, every day.(He most of the times misses me...but spitting is spitting!!) I tell him to stop and explain how nasty spitting is. I also tell him it is against the law. The boy's parent doesn't seem to see anything wrong with the kid's constant spitting. Today the boy spit on my car.
This kid spits when I am talking to his parent. The kid spits when I say something he disagrees with. And...the kid spits just when ever he wants ti irritate me. I think the kid is mentally disturbed.

Any ideas?

My boyfriend's little girl will be turning 2 in 2 weeks. I like his daughter & she likes me although I barely get to see his daughter due to his baby mama being childish. She rarely lets him see his baby because she wants him back (me & him been together for 2 years & 3 months) & dislikes me. Sometimes, because of a mistake I made 7 months ago, he will run back to his baby mama if we get into a bad argument. The baby's party will be at the baby mama's house. I think that he shouldn't attend, he should get her either the same day or get her for the whole weekend and we should all have our own birthday party for her. I'm VERY uncomfortable about him being over at the baby mama's house. I want to be a part of this babies life too & would like to take some part in her birthday. He believes it will cause friction if he gets her for the weekend, but I dont' think so. I don't know why he just won't reconsider. When he doesn't it makes it seem as though he wants to go her house. Help!

My grandmother spoils my mom's boyfriend lil girl. She tells the lil girl to call her grandma. My mom and her BF told her to stop cuz she has grandparents and they dont want to confuse her. But my grandma keeps buying gifts for this lil girl. The thing thats messed is that my grandma has other lil great grand kids and she doesn't even acknowledge them. My grandma will call the our house and ask about that lil girl. My mom tells her "Hey why dont u ask about ur real grandchildren. I dont remember u acting like with ur real grandkids. Which is true. I have a lil boy and hell no he aint gonna come 2nd , especially to that lil girl. Some of my family agrees with me, and some think im jeolous. Which is dumb cuz all i want to for all the kids to be treated equally. what do u think?

I posted this accidentally in marriage and relationships and want to repost it in the parenting section. I live in Michigan and we are inundated with the Tara Grant case right now. Many aspects of the case bother me but there is one aspect that bothers me as a mother: she worked long hours outside the home and had au pairs come in to her home to take care of her children. She paid other women to do what I believe was not only her job and obligation, but also a treasure that was given to her. Many women today are too busy climbing that corporate ladder, trying to prove themselves in society and falsely believing that the daily activities of caring for and loving her children reading, getting them dressed, serving their meals, cuddling them to sleep , guiding their moral development, etc can all be done better or sufficiently by someone else. Please don't give me the two income excuse. Two dedicated parents can work different shifts and find a compromise if they really wanted to!

My son is 14. He is immature. Even at this age, he still runs through the house at top speed, he plays tag with children that are 7 and 8 years old, and he will do inappropriate things in public like scream and laugh at things that don't warrant such a response. My approach has been to bring the behavior to his attention and show him what is mature an appropriate for his age. His face says I understand but his actions say different. How can I bring my son to his rightful level?

My son is 6 years old and is very mature for his age. He has held down a part time job for almost 2 years and is very good at saving up his money. He is very interested in getting a tattoo of sponge bob on his wrist. He has saved up the money and knows the risks of getting a tattoo. My husband and I both agree that he is old enough and responsible enough to make his own decisions. Some of my family thinks that he is too young to do this but I disagree. Why shouldn't I let my 6 year old son get a tattoo??

i have 2 boys and they fight alot, especially when i take them to school. The younger on pulls the other about and the older just responds to it by hitting back and pushing him. Its so frustrating I dont want to spend all my time with them shouting at them. Should I tell them to stop fighting or just turn a blind eye and let them get on with it?

At a party I saw several children who hold a shirtless boy by his arms and legs while another boy tickled his belly. Later they let him and grabbed another one to tickle. I felt this is a little abbusive.
