My son is 6 years old and is very mature for his age. He has held down a part time job for almost 2 years and is very good at saving up his money. He is very interested in getting a tattoo of sponge bob on his wrist. He has saved up the money and knows the risks of getting a tattoo. My husband and I both agree that he is old enough and responsible enough to make his own decisions. Some of my family thinks that he is too young to do this but I disagree. Why shouldn't I let my 6 year old son get a tattoo??

He's 6, he shouldnt be making a decision that'll stay with him for the rest of his life, not like that. My godson is 6, I don't think your child wants a tatoo on him when hes 20 that has the HULK in green. Come on, be a parent! He's still a baby!

Like everyone else has said "Because he is 6". It doesn't matter if he is very mature for his age, he is still 6. I am also concerned about him holding down a part time job for 2 years. Chores, I understand, but a job. When does he have time to be a kid. This will be the only time in his life that he can play and act goofy. Don't take that away from him. I say he is old enough to get a tattoo when he can drive, vote and go to war. If he is old enough to make those life decision then he is old enough to permenantly mark his body. He may know the risks of a tattoo, but trust me, he has NO idea about the pain. It blows my mind that you are even considering such a crazy notion. Get him a Henna tattoo, they are painless and last a couple of weeks, if nothing else.

Well lets see,
1. When he's forty and looking to move up in the world is Sponge Bob going to be a good reference?
2. What happens when Sponge Bob is canceled and he's stuck with this out dated cartoon on his body ?
3. You say he is very mature for a six year old so what, he's thinking on a eight or nine year old child's level. That's not exactly the most sage time in a person's life now is it?

And Finally...
I don't believe this is a real question and if it is I sincerely hope that sound you hear is Child Protective Services coming to remove this child and place him in a home with SANE individuals!!!

do you mean 16 year old? well if he is 16 and you and your husband both agree and he has worked to pay for it then i think he is old enough to know what he wants, and i would support him on it.You or your husband will have to go with him to sign for consent though, but i wouldn't let him get anything he might regret later in life, get something he loves,he likes to do,or a hobby of his etc.best wishes.ON THE OTHER HAND IF YOU MEAN A 6(SIX)YEAR OLD THAN Lady I'm sorry but you need to see a DR,that is way to young, good lord his body hasn't even really began to grow yet.and walking around with sponge bob all of his life, come on we all love cartoons when we are little but we don't know that we will later in life No if this is really a 6 year old we are talking about he cant hold down a part time job for 2 years he would have been 4,and he is no where near old enough or responsible enough to make his own decisions @ 6 that's why kids need parents for.So I'm gonna say there was a typing mistake and you really meant 16 years old.I cant even imagine a 6 year old working for 2 years and getting a tattoo.best wishes

For the simple reason that your son is only 6!!! Even though he may be bright for his age he still has a LOT of growing to do and as the skin stretches the tattoo will deform and getting a tattoo removed is WAY more painful than the initial placement! And even if he thinks its a good idea now as he gets older he'll probably regret it... can you imagine a 40 yr old with a deformed SpongeBob on his wrist!!!!

If he wants the tattoo that badly then get him a pack of temporaries!! Another option is taking him to get a Henna tattoo! (you'll just have to keep going back as long as this phase lasts!)

You will have to do it yourself because a responsible tattoo artist wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole. And....I'm pretty sure that when your kid becomes a teenager he will curse you for ever even considering putting a sponge bob tattoo anywhere on his body.
I think we'd all be interested to know what kind of job your 6 year old took on at the age of 4, that would make enough money to afford a tattoo.

While he may want a tattoo, I don't think he realizes how it will look in the future. Being 16, 25, 47, or even 79 with a SPONGEBOB tattoo? Come on, he likes it when he's six but he'll hate it when he's 13, and he'll be stuck with it. Don't let him make this mistake...he'll never even get a date in his life. "Hey, what's your name? Oh, is that a tattoo?" "Yes, it's of Spongebob." Come on. No girl wants a guy with a spongebob tattoo. And don't let him get a skull either, if you're thinking that. What six-year-old wants a skull on his body? COME ON IT'S A TATTOO AND HE'S SIX.

Because, much like peyote and crocheted vests in the 60's, Spongebob will eventually go out of style too.

Seriously, a child has no idea what the implications are of their decisions at his age. Let him start with a pink mohawk or an earring (In the ear), and once he realizes the attention it recieves (both positive and negative) I think he'll backpedal a little.

You also need to be aware that in some states this is illegal - known as child abuse or endangerment. I worked for a jewelry store once and pierced the ears of a 2month old baby - turns out it was the childs aunt and the mother didn't approve. Company sued and out of business they went over two tiny permanant holes in baby earlobes.

(I originally thought this was a typ-o and should've put a 1 in front of the six)

In most states it's illegal even if you sign a waiver a tattoo artist won't do it they would risk their license. And do you think personally that your sons old enough for a tattoo??? A sponge Bob tattoo??? In 10 years he'll be kicking himself! That's just wrong, if he wants to drive the car do you let him??? Do you let him drink too???

Tribal is more like a Meat-Head thing, think big muscle guys with tribal arm bands. For example Nick Lachey has the tribal sun and arm band(In case you don't know he's Jessica Simpsons ex husband, you can get pics on yahoo). I would totally go with something different, if you really like the tribal idea, just go to a tattoo shop and check out the pictures on the walls and get ideas and have the artist draw something up for you. Dont pick something off the wall and get it exactly as you see it, the artist can do something better and cooler than what is there on the walls.
