i.e. if I paid my 2007 property taxes in January of 2008 because I forgot, can I still deduct them off my 2007 1040 or would it be my 2008?

I have no idea why this is happening. I'm not aware of any money I owe anybody but I just got a warning from a credit monitoring service that I owe somebody $92. Has this ever happened to you? What does it mean?

I need some real estate advice. We closed on our house in San Antonio in August of 2006. The closing price was $139,500. We had to take $5,500 to closing. The actual cost to build our exact same house now, not market value, is $149,000. We have improved by adding some landscaping, painting all rooms, and adding a backsplash in the kitchen. The builder is still building on about 700 more lots in our neighborhood. We want to begin building another home this year on some land we own, but we are not sure how the sell of our current home will pan out. Do you think its possible to sell without any out of pocket expenses considering realtor fees and closing costs? Needless to say, we aren't hoping to make a profit.
I know it all depends on the market, etc. My main concern is the fact that they are still building, and the base price of our home has only increased about $9,000 in a year and a half.

Any professional advice is very appreciated!!!

I received a phone call back in October from a collection agency - telling me that I had a $600 balance with a video store (local independent one) for two unreturned DVDs.
First off, I DID return them (but they WERE like 4 days late). They called me and asked me about it, and I told them that it was returned. They said that they never got it. And then they just asked me to check again in my house in case I hadn't returned it. So I told him that that's useless cuz it's not in my house - it was returned!
One month later, a $100 charge that shows up on my credit card bill from the video store.
I was like, what the heck!? I thought about calling them to argue about it - but I figured that they would at least not bother me anymore. $100 is more than enough to buy two DVDs from Best Buy, isn't it?
So I don't really understand what this $600 is being charged to me for? Is there anyway I can dispute it and win?
And if this charge is legit, then what was with the $100 before?

Hi
I know the PELL grant is meant for educational expenses to be considered tax free money. I used $2100 of my pell grant to pay for a used car. I know i will have to declare it and pay taxes on it.

But can i use my PELL grant to pay for the HR block fee, state and fedral taxes.

If i do that, i'll just declare the amount paid on my 2008 return.

Is that legal?

Two friends live in a house and are both on the deed. The one whose name is not on the mortgage, and didn't get the financing, wants to kick the other one out. What rights does the mortgagee have? Can she get the other one off the deed? To reiterate: the one trying to put the other one out is on the deed but not the mortgage.

I recently applied for a credit card with 0% interest for 9 months on balance transfers. I transfered balances from 3 cards to this card. Two of them were done electronically but for the last card they sent me a check in the mail. I do not understand what to do. It says I am to deposit the check into my checking account and pay the other card if the check is payable to me alone. But the check says it is payable to me and the card company as well. Do I deposit the check into my checking account and pay the card company or do I mail the check itself to the card company? It will be kind of difficult to send the check itself as I get electronic statements for that card and pay my bills online.

We have 3 credit cards: Balance of 530 with 19.8%, 1640 and 1738 both at 29.99%. My hubby had cosigned for his older brother a car and we had to take it from him. It was in a wreck (hit and run) and did not have coverage (his brother lied). We are waiting on the police report. We were going to take the car and sell it but now that it is damaged we must fix it first. We do not have the money. We have been approved for a $6k loan at 28.33% (I assume it is an unsecured loan) with a term of 60 mos and the payment will be 188 a month. In april we will move into a cheaper house to free up some cash and we plan on paying the loan off long before the 60 mos. Does this sound like a good plan? Any advice?

PS Please no lectures about what we should not have done. We know and what's done is done, just trying to fix the mess we are in. Thank you!
