We made an offer on a house after we had a preapproval from a mortgage lender with a preferred buyers status since we had such a good credit score and debt to income ratio. The seller said they would not accept our offer until we provided a BFI which from my knowledge is a complete financial work up on us. We even got a commitment from the mortgage company and still the seller would not accept our offer with out seeing our BFI. Is that normal? Because it seems weird to me!

My spouse and I separated for the final time on July 31, 2007. I obtained a protective order for my children and myself which granted me custody. What is my filing status for the 2007 return. There is no chance of Married Filing Jointly.

If my child received SSI (about 7 grand) for 2007, can I claim them on my taxes and get the EIC? I will have to claim the SSI as income right? How does this work? I have 9,330 in income PLUS the SSI $. Do I get an EIC on an SSI dependant?

I am going to donate a lot of clothes, books, toys, games, movies and appliances today.

In previous years I have only donated about $300 worth of belongings and the homeowners income tax deduction was straight forward. What are the rules and conventions for larger donations?

How much value can I place on items such as books, Playstation 2 games, and DVDs?

What are the limits/rules that apply? Thanks

Tenants gave 30 days notice on Nov. 15th. (they were month to month)
Tenants physically moved out Dec. 15th, but did not return the keys and were in and out for about a week removing their belongings.
December 22nd, tenants returned the keys and we had a walk through. The place was a mess and I voiced my concerns...they just shrugged their shoulders and left.
Now, I know in NY state security deposit must be returned within a "reasonable" time...whatever that means, however my concern is it's going to take me a couple of weeks to get this place in re-rentable condition. It needs extensive cleaning, carpet shampooing, furniture removal (they left most of their furniture behind) and repainting...it looks like they started to paint, but never finished.
My husband and I have been doing the work ourselves and plan on charging the tenant from the security deposit. I don't want to be greedy...but I need to know what would be a reasonable amount to charge the security deposit?

One of my family members had a debt of $6700 from 2004. She did not start paying on it until last year (Late 2006). She has paid about $1800 toward it since then, but here's the catch:

After pulling her credit report this week, it showed that this collection debt was actually closed in 2005 and has had a $0 balance since then.

I am interested in helping my family member get this money back from the collection agency, since the $1800 she paid to them was paid *after* the debt was already closed with a zero-balance and reported on her credit.

1) What would be the best way to approach the collection agency about getting this money back?

2) If they refuse to return the total of these payments, what could be the best course of action to further pursue the matter or convince them they must return the money?

Thanks to all of you, in advance, for any help & suggestions you can provide.

My husband loaned his brother $10,000.00 back in June 07. Now his brother refuses to start paying him back. We evern tried working out a easy payment plan for him but he still hasn't made one payment. He wont return his phone calls or emails. We're thinking about contacting a lawyer since we can't get him to cooperate with us. It was DEFINITELY a LOAN. It even says "loan" on the check. Does anyone have any information on how we can get our money back?

I have a bill at a collection agency and I had set up payments before coming directly out of my checking acct but I decided not to renew and pay myself via their website. I got a call and I was told that if I didn't set up another automatic debit they would seek judgement against me and begin garnishing my wages. She also went on to say that she saw where I was getting a substantial income tax this year and where I was working again (none of which is true). Can they do that as long as I am paying or are these just scare tactics?

I just want to make sure I understand everything regarding the AMT. You can file/get refund in mid Jan. if you DON'T use one of the following 5 forms (Education Credits, Residential Energy Credits, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A Filers, Mortgage Interest Credit, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit). If you DO use one of those, they expect to be able to process those around Feb. 11.

Am I correct?

Regarding the child care expense, is that the form for when you pay for child care (day care) and can get reimbursed some of it?

I normally do my taxes on the first day they accept them, but since I have 2 children in daycare, I think this means I have to wait......right?

2 credit unions have denied me already--Even with a cosigner who has excellent credit. They wouldn't even let me apply with my cosigner because my credit is that terrible.

I really need a car to get back and forth. My car broke down on christmas eve. And I only have limited time to get a reliable car.
I only make $1,600 a month (after taxes), and I'm trying to pay off credit cards. But I don't know how to get the money for a new car. Please someone advise.

My husband and I found a home we liked last week. Our agent is on vacation so we did a drive by. We really liked it. Today I found out it was put under agreement on the 24th. SIX days ago. If it's under agreement, can we offer higher and if the seller likes our offer better, can he break the agreement with the other buyers?
