i.e. if I paid my 2007 property taxes in January of 2008 because I forgot, can I still deduct them off my 2007 1040 or would it be my 2008?

Hi
I know the PELL grant is meant for educational expenses to be considered tax free money. I used $2100 of my pell grant to pay for a used car. I know i will have to declare it and pay taxes on it.

But can i use my PELL grant to pay for the HR block fee, state and fedral taxes.

If i do that, i'll just declare the amount paid on my 2008 return.

Is that legal?

ok i want to give my grandchild $120,000 but i dont want to pay the gift tax (who does?)

is this legal: can 10 of my familiy members plus my grandchild and me go to a bank where i give each of the 10 a check for $12,000. then they turn around and sign the check over to my grand child. now we all avoid the gift tax.

i know the spirit of the law. and this is kind of an abuse of the "letter of the law", but the letter of the law seems to alow for this. will I (we) get in trouble?

I file single and only made $18,409 this year. I paid $1217 in withholding. So why is my tax return only $157? This woman I work with has like 7 kids and gets a lovely check over $9000 from the IRS, ridiculous! Is she getting my money or what?

I've been living and working abroad for a number of years but am planning to return to work in the US. I'm trying to figure out if I will be able to live on a teacher's salary. They are so low that every dollar counts. I've determined that if social security (teacher retirement) is withheld before income tax is figured, there is a difference of around $100 a month in take-home. But I can't remember how it works.

Is the federal income tax withheld first, then social security? Or are they both determined based on the gross salary? What about state income tax? Is it based on gross or net after federal and social security?

Thanks.

My question is if I re-file with a 1040X real soon rectifying the missing stock trades - will I still get in trouble with the IRS?

Hi
I just got a Pell Grant for $4000. I also got what the college calls a Board of Governors Waiver(BOGW). So when i register for classes, i pay no registration costs(because of the BOGW). There are some costs i do pay like Student Associations fees, etc etc, which are about $40 - $50 per quarter and the cost of books.
However, i use the money for the PELL Grant to pay for the above expenses.

Am, i still eligible for the HOPE credit when i file my taxes even though i paid money that i got from the PELL Gran

I am not looking for the answers to my work, I am just trying to figure out how to do my work. If you have murchandise inventory beginning and murchandise purchases and ending inventory how do you figure out what your purchases are and what the ending inventory is? It tells the sales as well.

Returns that include the following forms cannot be filed until Feb. 11, 2008:
Schedule 2, Form 1040A, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A Filers.

this is off of the irs web site , it does not state that form 2441Child and Dependent Care Expenses for 1040 tax filers will be delayed ., so my question is if i file a 1040 rather than a 1040a along with form 2441 will their be a delay.
