we had to relocate half way through 2006 due to unforseen job closing. we now pay high rent near our new jobs and are trying to carry the mortgage by renting the former house until it sells, which it hasn't yet because the market is slow. we are losing money on the home, can we declare losses against our 2006 income? we assume that if we declare it as a rental property to take such losses we cannot still take the mortgage interest deduction, or can we still for the number of months we lived there? can we declare and deduct losses currently being accrued where we have had to relocate, as we now lose each month due to high rent necessary to live within a commute distance to work (we both have 1-2 hour commutes and live in between the two new jobs)

For instance, I am expecting a tax return check and my name isn't going to be correct on it. It's only like one letter that was mispelled in my first name.
Even though my social security is correct, is it possible to still cash my check with no problems? ORRR do I just have to wait six months, get the check, tell them there's a mistake, correct the mistake, send the forms BACK in, and then wait six more months for my return?

Can I just call them and tell them the mistake? Will I get in trouble if I fill out a NEW set of forms even though they have my old ones on record?

My uncle (CPA) explained to me that next year my husband and I will benefit from an automatic $1,000 tax credit AND we will get an automatic $3,000 tax deduction because we will have a baby this year.

First of all, what is the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction?

B/c of our baby, can we expect 2 tax benefits that will automatically be granted by the government, or does this differ from state to state?

Hypothetically, if we owe...say $1,000 in taxes this year for fed and state (from the 2006 year), and we did no changes on our W2's for this current tax year (no additional withholding, same deductions...plus our new dependent- baby), should we expect to "break even" or perhaps be reimbursed a couple hundred in 2008 b/c of our baby?

Our accountant neglected to tell us about the auto $1000 credit...

Thanks for your help!

I am a self-employed artist. My accountant has just dropped the bomb on me that I owe the IRS $2,500 this year. Is there ANYTHING anyone might know, any little secret about a deduction I might have missed? (besides your normal expenses and mileage)

On my w-2, I noticed my 'social security wages' (box 3) are higher than my 'wages, tips, other compensation' (box 1.) Are either of these amounts my total wages for the year? Or, are these just the amounts that are taxable after insurance premiums and other pre-tax deductions are taken out?

I was supposed to get a check in February. I was a check last week. I called the IRS. They said that I should either have a check by April 2nd or they will need additional information. Does that mean that I'm getting audited. I would like to know will I be receiving a refund and what are they looking or on my taxes?

I have a couple of 1099s and have calculated that I owe about 100$ federal taxes, that comes to 900$ over what I paid in regular jobs (I mean if I didn't have those 1099 I would get 800) I know part of it is social security and medicare but it's still high. Also i didin't make any estimated payments since i had no clue i would make this much will i be penalized?

I'm trying to do my taxes and I can't find out how much I paid for my CA Vehicle License Fee last year. Can a few people tell me what yours is and on what type of car so I can estimate? Mine is a 2004 Saturn Ion. So any similar cars/years in the state of California would be helpful.

I need to find a SIMPLE way to figure out taxes if I am self-employeed. For federal, state & SSI. Is it too much to ask to find a place that just gives you the formula's and definations for all three? I know my local tax is a flat rate % so I'm not concerned about that. I got more confussed than ever when I "googled" self employment. Thanks for whatever help you can give. All I want to do is babysit for a friend & do some freelance writing so I need to a program for my taxes.
