The earned income credit (EIC) can be obtained without having a child. If you are at least 25 and under 65, and your earned income is less than $12,120 ($14, 120 for married filing joint), you may be eligible for the EIC. There's a good calculator on the IRS website http://www.irs.gov. For your keyword search, type in "earned income credit" and read the instructions from there.

EIC can be available to people without a qualifying child if their income is low enough. For 2006, income must be under $12,120 ($14,120 if filing jointly) and the person claiming it must be between the ages of 25 and 64.

Don't worry about it at this time. If IRS hasn't audited you, they probably won't.
