Not with the direct deposit, names must match.
However, there may be a way. Let's assume you don't have a bank account because you don't have an SSN, or bad credit, etc.
Your friend (if they trust you) may be able to go to his/her bank with you and add you to the account (you'll still need to fill out the application but it may be much easieer to "join" an account, then to open one in certain circumstances - even if you don't have an SSN.
After the above step, your name will appear on the account so the DD will work.
Hope this helps.

Presumably opening a checking account is out of the question! Not sure about the regulations in the US but this would present a problem in the UK. Banks here will not accept a cheque made out to anyone other than the account holder. You could approach the bank along with your friend, both taking with you appropriate identification, and see if you can make the cheque over to your friend. Alternatively, explain to the IRS that you don't have a checking account and see if thereis another method for them to make the payment, maybe a money order perhaps.
The only other way I can think of is to try a cheque cashing agent - you'll have to pay commission of course, so I'd try other alternatives first.
Sorry not to have more positive ideas - good luck!

Direct Deposit only works with accounts that are in your name. I learned that when I asked my employer about it at my first job a few years back.
However, to deposit into an account on site at the bank teller, you merely have to endorse the check, and have the proper account number on the bank slip.
However, I would suggest checking the laws about how and where you can deposit a federally issued tax check. It may be illegal.

No. It is illegal, unless you are a joint account holder. If you don't disclose your account. You can ask the tax office to send you a check, which you could then cash at a bank. Otherwise, whatever you are considering doing is considered fraud(a felony). Your friend, you and your friend's bank could get into deep trouble.

why don't you just open your own account? or just get the check written directly to you?
if you are old enough to file taxes, you should have a bank account already. i wouldn't trust my friend. he could tell you it never arrived, and take your money.

Check with your bank. Many banks don't allow that - if the name doesn't match, they'd reject the automatic deposit, and you'd end up getting a paper check mailed to you.

You can't because the name on the cheque would differ from your friend.
