I do bookkeeping for a small business.
Since I have no ownership interest, I work as an independent contractor.
I also make myself a check monthly for my services and have it signed by the owner.
I do not withhold taxes and settle up at the end of the year since I have other sources of income.
Do I need to make myself a Form 1099 since I do the books, write my own check, and know what I made last year?

I am doing my partners taxes and stated that the both children did not live with him at all and checked that they were non relatives, and the amount of refund went up. Can that really happen? How does that work with dependents whose non relative claim them?

I'm buying a house that will be completely in my name, but both myself and my fiance will live in it. I bought the house with the intention of my then girlfriend (now fiance) helping pay part of the monthly living expenses (mortage, utilities, etc.). The house will be the primary (only) residence for both of us. Since I'm the owner, I'll be writing the checks to the bank for the mortgage and she'll be giving me a check every month. Is her payment to me considered taxable income for me? Is there a special tax-free provison for shared living expenses? I know it won't matter after we get married, but that won't be until early 2008. Do I have to report every penny that she pays me for the mortgage in 2007?

TAX QUESTIONS! Please

I lent someone $2000 during the tax year and they didnt pay it back until the next year. I dont have thier SSN but I do have the original check that was written to them. I wish to somehow deduct this on my Schedule-C but its over $600 so cant be considered non-employee compensation.. should it be a consulting fee? He was sort of a consultant.

Also alot of payments for services (security, graphic design, street team promoters) were made to companies/regular people with Credit cards and checks.. but some were made in cash.. can I deduct these?

If they didn't make enough that they were required to file, therefore they didn't, and then found out later down the road that they could have to receive a refund, is it possible to file for those past years and receive the money that was withheld? Or should they just accept the loss and let it go?

I received a 1099-B form detailing the proceeds I received when I got rid of my Sharebuilder stocks. However, I can find nothing in the 1040 instructions for where to report this income on lines 7-22 in the Income section of a tax return.

I am right below the maximum cut-off point for the earned income credit. I am wondering if I do freelance work and up my income by say, 3,000, am I just wasting my time because I will no longer qualify for that credit? In other words, am I just working next year's refund away?

I am a single mom with two dependents.

I don’t understand how to fill out a w-4 form. I’m married, but have been putting single on my w-4 form. What is the difference between claiming 0 & 1? I heard that 0 will allow you a larger refund at the end of the year but takes more taxes out of your check & putting a 1 will result in paying back the IRS but less tax taken out. Also, if taxes get taken out of our checks, why is it that sometimes we have to still pay back during income tax time? If I am married, can I still claim single on my w-4? If so, how many allowances should my husband put on his and what about mine? We have no kids. I also have a 2nd job so I’m not sure how I would include that or fill that one out as well. Is it true that if my husband puts 1 allowance on his, I can’t? How does filling out a W-4 as married affect our checks or w-2/refund at the end of the year? I just double-checked and my husband & I both claim 1 on our Federal & State for 2006 through now. Does that mean that when it comes for filing incom

Unfortunately my father past away a few months ago. Been doing deep cleaning lately and I'm wondering if have any reason to keep his very old tax return documents. I'll keep the most recent but is that all I should keep? He doesn't owe anything or anything like that, so I want to get rid of it. Let me know if I'm not making a huge mistake :)

I'm looking to file my 2005 taxes. From what I've been told, it can't be done electronically.Does anyone know 'how' exactly I'd go about doing this? What forms I'd request and what not? Also, is this something I can do myself? I'd rather not go through H&R Block or anything/anyone like that... Is there a form on the IRS website I can print out..? I looked but couldn't seem to find any. Thanks guys.

My taxes were sent via mail on Feb 8th and I opted for direct deposit. My irs.gov link to where's my refund said I wouldn't get the money until Mar. 27th. How many of you have gotten the wrong date from the IRS and received the direct deposit much sooner?
