You might check the renters rights in your state but I am pretty sure that he has to give you written notice and a certain amount of time.

I may be wrong, but from the way you wrote the question and personal experience you may thinking this is a "one-off" issue.
I would guess your landlord would point to a long list of issues.
My experience is tenants have the ability forget the history, for example if a payment is late they blame the mail or a holiday, forgetting they are late every month.

Regarding the ex, how does he act on the property? Does he come and go late, park in the wrong spot, make noise? And is really helping you or himself? Be honest. If is flopping at your place because he really does not have his own, then your landlord has figured out what is happening. Can the ex help out on the rent?
Also you said you are late due to a bank problem, then site something about 21 days. Why would 21 days matter if you plan to pay.
Also the bank problem seems to be generic and someone else's fault. Think about it, how on earth is your landlord responsible for managing or understanding your bank account?
Regarding the washer. Does you lease state he is required to provide a washer. Probably not, so if provided great, if not then OK. Can the ex take the laundry and do it? That would be a real help.
As for eviction. In most states, after 5 days a 3-Day notice can be posted. Then after three days and eviction notice can be filed.

late is late right ?
Why shouldn't you get evicted ?

Pay your rent and look for another place to live. Take your laundry to a laundromat and do it there if your washing machine is broken.
