Many companies use their data systems to store and review online job applications and resumes. Paper resumes and applications are often scanned and stored in the same or parallel files.

When one or more positions are available, they search those documents by keywords and are quickly able to identify any desired number of applicants to process further and possibly call for interviews.

So if your applications or resumes were submitted a while ago, you might think about submitting fresh ones to the widest possible range of companies available that might have positions in your field of interest and training.

Since one might assume that the oldest applicants have probably found jobs or may no longer be looking, it would make the most sense to look at the most recent applications first.

I don't know if people really look at them. I doubt it. I think if you want a job badly enough it's always worth it to show up in person. It not only shows your interest and commitment to finding a job, it gives the prospective employer a chance to see how you present yourself. If they like you, they may make time to talk to you right then.
