The answer is very simple, Gal Friday, is a Personal Assistant, or a Personal Aide.

OUt of high school, I had a boss that called me his "Gal Friday" - I was part time, on call, and relied upon to do all other duties as assigned. I got do horribly boring office tasks, picking up dry cleaning, dealing with payroll issues, standing at the copier for hours - *ugh*.

I like to think this job motivated me to go to college so I didn't have to be resigned to a life like this.

In general, an assistant who has a variety of duties. If in an office environment, you could compare to a secretary.

They call the position '' gal or girl Friday'' after '' Friday'' who was the companion/assistant to Robinson Crusoe. (named Friday because that was the day of the week they met).

I wonder if they posted that title as the position because they only want women to apply? They cant stop a man from applying but most would be discouraged doing so, because they would be put off by the job title.

MAN FRIDAY/ GIRL FRIDAY - A man Friday is: "An efficient and devoted aide or employee; a right-hand man. Friday is a character in Daniel Defoe's novel, 'The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner,' published 1719-1720. Friday is the young native man rescued by Robinson Crusoe, certainly the best-known castaway in literature.(Crusoe) calls him 'man Friday' because he met him on a Friday. 'Girl Friday' is a term, now frowned upon, for a resourceful female assistant, made popular by the classic 1940 comedy adaptation of 'The Front Page' (His Girl Friday) starting Rosalind Russell as an ace reporter and Cary Grant as her cynical editor and ex-husband."

It's kind of like a secretary, but the hours are longer and the demands are greater. You have to know how to do a zillion things quickly and efficiently. It's like being the boss's "right hand".
