hi guys, yesterday when i tried out my new undergravel filter (carbon and filter wool) i my fish started acting a bit weird (hanging around the top, except for the my pearl gourami). this morning when i checked on them i found out that when i had turned on the undergravel filter i had turned of my submersible filter after i had rinsed out the filter sponge. so i turned it on again. i did a partial water change, about 25%, but they are still acting weird, and my Bala shark was just sitting on top of the submersibly filter. is this a possible ammonia or nitrate posioning?

The tank has 10 mollies, 2 hatchet fish, 6 tetras, 3 sword tales, 4 shrimp(~1.5" long), 2 unknowns but tropical community, and an algae eater, 200watt heater set at 78deg, under gravel filter and a rena filstar xp3 filter, and live plants. i want to do this with the least amount of stress on my fish, all tho i realize it will stress them anyhow, any advice would be appreciated, i know i need to save as much of the water as possible, was looking at probably saving 25 gal. would this be enough? and as for the filter should i leave water in it to avoid killing the good bacteria? i figure when i move the fish themselves, i will put them in a 5 gal bucket with a bubble stone to keep them happy :) the move is only about a 1/4 mile but will of course take time to get the tank down and set back up (probably a few hours). again any advice is appreciated. thanks

I just got two bettas today-a bright red male(not a crowntail) and a female( white body, red fins) and i want to know if its ok to put them in the same tank. apparently, if its two guys, they kill each other, and if its two girls, they still kill each other.

i know they have to still tolerate each other so that new baby bettas hatch, but are they the type to eat each other after mating? (not that that's why i got them, but still, wouldnt that happen)

i really like both of them, so id like to know. i do have two fishbowls if they cant stay in the same tank though.

thanx in advance

Okay, Here are my questions.......

Can Fantail, Common, Comet, Shubunkin, Ryukin, Tosakin, Telescope-eye, Jikin, Veiltail, Moor, Oranda, Lionhead, Ranchu, Pompom, Celestial, Bubble-eye and Pearlscale Goldfish all live together in peace?

Can all tropical fish live together (for example: Neon Tetra, Cichlids etc.)?

How many gallons EXACTLY can ONE goldfish have and how many gallons for ONE tropical fish?

And in Goldfish and Tropical fish tanks, can oh-so-called "Bottom Feeders" live in their enviroment (tank)?

Fish experts, Vets and fish enthusiasts PLEASE give me answers! :o

Thanks!:D

I have 8 fancy goldfish, as well as 80 gallons worth of tanks and equipment that I am taking down because I am at school in VA and I am driving home tomorrow. I know quite a bit about goldfish, I've been keeping them for about 3 years now, but I still have so much to learn! I am going to be putting the tanks and equipment (heater, aerator, etc.) in storage here in VA and will then set them up in the fall when I return from FL. Is just letting the equipment dry good enough or should I disinfect it? The thing I always have hated about coming back to the equipment after 3 months is that it smells awful, because all I really did was rinse it and get rid of the visible stuff by scrubbing. I know you can use salt but i'm not sure how or what else you could use that wouldn't be toxic to the fish. Any help would be appreciated!

I remember reading in a book that they sell aquarium thermostats. The heater is connected to the thermostat, and turns it on. Then it turns it off when it reaches a desire temperature, and turns it on when it falls to a set temperature. Does anyone know where I can buy something similar to this? Thanks!

My male guppy is chasing my female (not a surprise). But he's trying to nip at her, not "poke" her. Anyone know about this? Thanks! And oh yeah, I'm 75% sure she is pregnant.
