In theory yes, but it's a bad idea to do so because the fry and later baby fish will need much more room within only a few days. Also, unless the pair is very compatible AND you are right there to remove her after breeding he will kill her in very short order. She really needs more space than that to get away from him.

You could but I wouldn't advise it. You'd be much better off using a 10 gallon tank half full of water starting out. With no gravel on the bottom. Please do some research on these fish before you start to breed them. Make sure you have food ready for the fry and seperate tanks for the male and female after breeding. Yes.

Make sure your tank is long enough because the female betta will need room to escape the male after they have spawned.

You would need AT LEAST 5 gallons of water because the fry will grow to be really big.
