I keep mine at 76. The hotter the temperature, the faster they age. Yes, this is true.

It really depends on the fish. Freshwater fish like goldfish like it cool to room temperature. Barbs like mid 70's. Cichlids like high 70s to low 80s. And there are all different requirements in between. What type of fish are you planning on keeping?
Someone posted that the warmer the water, the shorter the lifespan. That's true, in a way.
When temps are at the high range for the particular breed, they metabolize quicker, eat more, grow quicker and age quicker. It speeds up the entire life cycle. Another thing to think of is that the warmer the water, the less oxygen in it.
This may seem like "downsides", but again, each fish has its own temperature range that it thrives in. If you go too low in an effort to keep a fish alive longer (bear in mind that most cichlids can live 15 - 20 yrs if kept properly, goldfish 20 - 30 yrs, but small fish like bettas only 3 yrs), it will actually have the opposite effect: the fish will be cold, stressed and be apt to catch more infections/diseases.

There is no right answer here. Depending on the fish you want to keep, the temperature will vary from 70F up to 84F. I sell South American fish and keep most of my tanks between 78F and 82F because that is what the fish in that tank require. The best answer I can give you is to research the fish you want in the tank and find a happy middle ground.

Mid to high 70's (F),but if you look up each individual fish's requirements you will find that it varies considerably. Also if the tank is new you will want to keep it at 80 degrees F,until the cycle has finished. After cycling SLOWLY reduce the temperature about 1 degree every two days.

i keep mine around 72 or so. if this is your first tank make sure you let it cycle for several days before adding fish. if you already added fish it is ok, but watch the nitrite rate.
