I just got two bettas today-a bright red male(not a crowntail) and a female( white body, red fins) and i want to know if its ok to put them in the same tank. apparently, if its two guys, they kill each other, and if its two girls, they still kill each other.

i know they have to still tolerate each other so that new baby bettas hatch, but are they the type to eat each other after mating? (not that that's why i got them, but still, wouldnt that happen)

i really like both of them, so id like to know. i do have two fishbowls if they cant stay in the same tank though.

thanx in advance

Bettas are relatively peaceful fish. Their agressive behaviour shows when mixed with other bettas or anything with long, colorful fins that the betta may confuse for another betta. Males should not be kept with other males. Females develop a hierarchy so should be kept alone or in groups of 3 or more. Males should only be kept with females during the brief breeding period.
To breed a betta : Place the male betta into a tank with no substrate; instead, add some floating plants. Place female Betta next to tank to encourage male to build a bubble nest. Place female in tank with male. Male and female will mate and male will wrap around female to squeeze the eggs out of her, at which point the female will be bruised and need to be removed to a tank to heal for 3 weeks. Male will pick up the eggs and move them to the bubble nest. Lack of substrate ensures the Betta will not miss any eggs. Betta fry will appear in 24 hours and will need to be fed crushed flake food, and eventually, baby brine shrimp.
Hope this helps!!!

How large is the tank? If it is small I would say no. Male Betta's are very aggressive even when they breed. And two females can be placed in the same tank. I actually have 3 Betta's (1 male, 2 females) in my community tank (35 gallons) and they are doing well. I've had them together for the past 3 months except during breeding. I would recommend nothing smaller than a 20 gallon with lots of hiding places for the female. If you want to attemp it in a 20 gallon just keep a close eye on them. Congrats on your beautiful new Betta's! And here is a awesome web site with alot of info on these fish.

The male Betta would kill the female, if she is not in breeding condition.

So if you don't want the Bettas mating, keep them in separate bowls.

Two females don't always kill each other. Just sometimes the the females are aggressive.

After the eggs hatch, the male would kill her.

Good Luck

They should only be put together at breeding time. The male squeezes the female's body to push out the eggs. Then she has to be removed. The male betta puts the eggs in his bubble nest and watches over them until they hatch. He takes care of them for the first 4 or 5 days then needs to be removed so he doesn't eat them.
If the female betta rejects his advances, he'll kill her. If he isn't in breeding mode, he'll kill her.

They might be agressive, but then the male might start to mate with her. To start, divide the tank in half with a clear divider so that they can see each other. When they do see each other and don't bang on the divider, add one of them in with the other one and see what happens. If they start to fight, put it back in the other half. If they are peaceful, wait 15 minutes and see what they are doing. Then remove the divider and now you have a happy male/female betta.

The male Betta fish have bright colored fins (they are frequently pink, pink, blue, eco-friendly, pink, orange, and frequently a blend of colorings) and bodies with lengthy tails at the same time as the female Bettas are brown or gray with stubby tails. once you pass to a puppy save the Betta fish are kept in small boxes by utilising themselves and it is going to say in the adventure that they are male or lady. in case you nevertheless can not distinguish them, ask someone that works contained in the save which will be useful you.

Keep them separated. Only when they both are in breeding condition will the male tolerate the female in his space and even then only until they are finished mating. Otherwise, eventually he will kill her.

Well I had bettas once. They didn't fight each other. They were male and female.
