hi guys, yesterday when i tried out my new undergravel filter (carbon and filter wool) i my fish started acting a bit weird (hanging around the top, except for the my pearl gourami). this morning when i checked on them i found out that when i had turned on the undergravel filter i had turned of my submersible filter after i had rinsed out the filter sponge. so i turned it on again. i did a partial water change, about 25%, but they are still acting weird, and my Bala shark was just sitting on top of the submersibly filter. is this a possible ammonia or nitrate posioning?

Yes, it most likely is the result of ammonia build up. The submersible filter should still contain enough bacteria to take care of the problem, but watch it closely for a few days and change water as needed to keep the ammonia and nitrites in check.

Did you wash everything well before you put it in the tanl. That is important that you do so.

Are you sure you are getting enough oxygen in the water for the fish. That might be the reason they are at the top. Looking for oxygen.

There may have been something in the new items or filter material that is robing the wter of oxygen. The water has to be at least three percent free oxygen for fish to survive.
