They really aren't a good choice for a 30 gallon tank as they get to be over a foot long. Here's a bit more info on them:

It's also worth noting that a few different species have this common name, but the first link is for the most common. Also, none of the species mentioned are suitable for a 30 gallon tank.

Hope that helps.

Needlefish
Xenentodon cancila (Hamilton, 1822)
55 gallon minimum tank.

While not a very aggressive fish, this species will prey on any fish small enough to fit into its rather large mouth. They prefer to be kept in slightly brackish water, so research should be done before purchasing this species. They are very shy, and all steps should be taken to help the fish stay at ease in the aquarium. Subdued light levels, lots of decorations and plants, as well as keeping the fish in small groups with its own kind are all appreciated. Feed meaty and live foods. Sexing is difficult, but it is reported that the fins of males are tipped in black. Keep the aquarium covered as these fish will often leap out of the smallest canopy openings.

Max Size: 15 inches
Temperature: 72 - 79

Hi,
I think that your tank is way to small to start keeping needle fish, though they are cool.
you need a tank of 75 gallens at least.
I have looked up a sight for you,
hope that it helps
