fish will only grow according to the size of their tank. only in a large pond will your goldfish get to be 18 inches. you've got absolutely nothing to worry about :)

You should have no trouble finding another person to give the fish to. The common comet is usually the fish given away at carnivals. I had a customer bring in 3 that he had in a 5 gallon tank. They were 12" ea. I couldn't believe they were alive being in such a small tank. He was changing the water every day. The fish were at least 2 years old. The only reason he donated them was because he was moving back with his parents and there was no room for the tank. We gave them to a person with an outdoor pond.
It is illegal to dump any captive fish in a river, stream, lake or pond.
As another suggested, the carnival people would probably take the fish too.

Um, the humane thing to do would be give him away to a friend. To be quite honest, I've never had a fish from a carnival last longer than a day or two. I've heard of some lasting a long long time, but nah. Your fish might not make it real long. Lots of goldfish don't.

ALSO. You have yours in a 3 gallon? A fish will not grow BIGGER than his environment. If you keep him in a smaller tank, he won't grow to his 18 inches. He'd grow that big if you put him in a hundred gallon tank like you see at doctors offices. I have mollies (fun little fishies with personality) in a 10 gallon. They are only a couple inches big. I had mollies in a 20 gallon and they grew to be almost 4 inches. They simply don't grow and fill up their environment. The tank stunts their growth or something.

Please, just don't flush your goldfish :(

A fish can't grow larger than the tank it's in. I have a common pleco and i had it for about a year and kept it in a small bowl until I did some research that it could grow huge so I got a pond and when I placed my pleco in the pond it grew so fast. So the tank decides how big the fish should get. Or maybe you could just sell it

Your goldfish might get to be 18 inches if it were to live in a lake, but not in your 3 gallon fish tank! Feed it, change it's water every couple of days, and enjoy! We've had pet goldies for years and they never get bigger than the size that their environment allows.

Good Luck!

My goldfish grow to a comforable size for their tank. I kept two in a 5 gallon tand (fish from the fair) they stayed small and then I put them in a 55 gallon tank and they started to grow to the size of a koi because they had space.

Ive had a goldfish for 14 years and its still only about 2 and a half inches long.........you may have a Koi carp if its growing fast? you can give it away if it gets too big, also they seem to grow relative to the size of the container theyre in, if you put em in a biger tank they seem to grow a bit bigger....

It sounds like they've outgrown their tank, so I would offer them to a pet store or a friend. Do not let them go! They are non-native and could carry diseases that will harm other fish.

We have a fish from a Japanese festival we had at our school he's survived a few months and is quite happy, but it's very very unlikely he will get that big unless he lives in a very big lake. He will stay just big enough for his home.

donate it to your local carnival so they can sell it to the next person who throws a ball into a milk bottle. lol im just kidding. you can always return it. its easy to do. you dont need a receipt, lol. i returned my turtles back to the store after a year so you could easily return it i think. if not, it was worth a try. maybe you could give it away
