Live plants such as Anacharis and Horn wort are oxygenating plants and all live plants absorb fish waste(nitrites) from the water, which helps prevent excessive algae growth.
Live plants like a slower air current and slightly cooler temperature than most people keep their tanks.
Live is not good in a newly set up tank without some fertilizer and lots of times, they clog the filter.
Fish seem to prefer the live version much better for hiding young fry.

Silk plants are sometimes cheaper, depending on the size. They are only for decoration and don't give off CO2. Real plants give out CO2 for the fish to breathe. For real plants you have to have a special fertilizer placed underneath the gravel, and occasionally you have to add liquid fertilizer to help them grow. I would suggest fake plants if you're on a budget.

The silk plants usually look more realistic and are softer for those fish with long delicate fins or for fish such as bubble eye goldfish. Other than that it's a matter of personal preference.

Live plants are better in my opinion. There is more maintance with real plants, but they provide a more natural environment for your fish. Live plants remove harmful nitrogen(ammonia, nitrate) and provide oxygen for the tanks inhabitants.
