Fish - January 2007

There was a boy standing on a corner selling fish.

He was saying, "Dam fish for sale, dam fish for sale."

A preacher walked up and asked why he was calling them dam fish.

The kid said, "I caught them at the dam, so they're dam fish."

The preacher bought some, took them home and asked his wife to cook the dam fish.

His wife looked at him in bewilderment and said, "Preachers aren't supposed to talk like that."

The preacher explained why they were dam fish, and she agreed to cook them. When dinner was ready and everyone was sitting down, the preacher asked his son to pass him the dam fish.

His son replied, "That's the spirit dad. Pass the fuckin potatoes!"

We got my daughter a 3-gallon tank for Christmas and had three fish in there, two of them mollies. I just found both mollies dead at the bottom of the tank and I have no clue why. They were frisky and eating well yesterday. The water is clear and the filter seems to be working. If one were dead I could chalk it up to an individual problem, but since both died at the same time it leads me to believe something is wrong with the tank.

Anyway, I guess we need to start over. What fish should I replace them with and what can I do to make sure they live a normal lifespan?

My goldfish, *Homer Jaelyn*, born June 28 2003, is almost 4 years old - and doing great!!

I'm really surprised that he lived this long considering he had a few near death experiences (sort of):
1. He survived a 5 day road trip in the hot car while we traveled across the country
2. He died and came back to life. (I forgot to add the solution to his water when I cleaned his tank... that caused him to float upside down for over 6 hrs... I spent the whole night flipping him over onto his stomach... a few hrs later, he was swimming again)
3. He survived 3 weeks without his tank being plugged in (we were w/o electricity do to the hurricane last year)

Besides all of that... I was just wondering, why has my fish lived this long - considering that he has been through a lot of tough things... Do most goldfish live to be 4+ yrs old? A lot of goldfish I've known were lucky to live past a few weeks... I'm really surprised he lived to be so old!! What is the oldest that a goldfish has ever lived??

I have been doing lots of research lately and every single site says you need a 10 gallon tank for a Goldfish to live.
I have ONE Pearlscale Goldfish (still growing) in a 2 gallon hexagon tank.
But I have read that you will need a gallon per inch of fish
Right now my fish is only about 1.4 inch long (not measuring the tail) and about 1.8 (measuring the tail) estimate.
So is this true that you only need one gallon of fish per inch for a goldfish?
Also,
If you do say that I need a 10 gallon tank. What could I do to make my fish live as long as it can in a 2 Gallon tank? like change the water more often or what?

I have comets and calico goldfish in the same tank. For some reason, 1 of the comets and one of the calicos are just sitting in the corner of the tank for some reason. It kind of looks like they are sleeping.. but I know they are not. I am positive that they are not deceased, but this strange behavior is making me question the health of them. If I come near the tank, they move, however.. once I walk away, they go back to the same corner together. What is up with this?

I'm not sure which ones it was, but, all in one tank, I have a cichlid, 3 goldfish, and two rosy barbs. There were also three red tailed sharks, but the tank was becoming crowded so we moved one over to another tank to make sure it would get along with the frog and catfish. Earlier, I checked the the tank with the two sharks still in it, and the fish with large tails(i.e. all but the yellow cichlid), had had their tails nibbled on. Will the tails grow back, or will they always look torn up? Is there anything I should do to help the healing? All of the sharks are now with the frog and catfish, as they do not seem to mind eachother.

I have 3 tiger barbs and a bottom feeding catfish, will they be ok with 3 baby red bellies much smaller than them in a 10 g tank for a short period of time?

I have a 20 gallon aquarium with the following fish:
2 Dalmation Mollies
4 (Blue) Neon Tetras
3 (Gold) Neon Tetras
4 Tiger Barbs

Do i have too many fish in my tank and are they too crowed? If i do have to many, what do i do? Also, don't worry since i have a school of tiger barbs they do not pick on the tetras and always keep to themselves. Thank you!
