Fish - January 2007

I have a fish and he just lays at the bottom of the pond on his side. His eyes kinda stick out and it's creepy. Everyone says he is dead but I know he's not because he moves when I poke him and he is still breathing. Sometimes he moves on his own but that is rare.
What's wrong with him?

I had my fish for 17 years now and some of the little fishes (fry) were able to survive by going under the gravel and living there until they get big enough to fend for themselves against the other fish on top. The little fish were able to survive under the gravel because of these plate/rack things with little tiny slits in them (I don't know what they're called or can't find the right word to describe them. sorry!) that I put on the bottom of tank that provides probably 1/2 inch of space - the gravel would be spread out on top of that plate/rack thing. After 17 years of raising these fish the plate/rack things are starting to crack and since I am getting busier and busier, I tend the clean the tank less often so some of the fish would grow pretty big in there. I want to find new plate/rack things, newer ones that would provide more space for the fry that escapes in there, but I can't seem to find them. Can anyone help me find them? Or have any alternative ideas? Thanks a bunch

After a disaterous nitrogen episode, I am left with three female guppies. I have a 20 gallon tank with artificial plants and those root like things for fishies to swim through and around. I also have two bubble sticks buried under the gravel and two filtration systems attached to the tank. SO the question is, what should I put in there that will get along well with the surviors? I was thinking a betta female only, but I would like thoughts from people who DO this for a hobby and not illeducated guesses. The tank is in my son's room as it's good white noise at night, but I take care of it.

I have only one male betta and I want a fish to suck the crap that the betta leaves behind. I've never done this before and don't know if my betta will kill it or if he'll tolerate it.

I have a small, yellow fish, about an inch and a half to two inches long, and his yellow is BRIGHT and SOLID. He looks exactly like a Lemon Cichlid, but he has a single, black dot on only one side of his body. It's at the base of his tail, but not on his fin. Can anyone tell me what he is?

I seem to be having a problem that I have never had before with my guppies. It seems to be some kind of disease, parasite or maybe even a fight between other fish or frogs. My female guppies are starting to look sick. Their upper lip is receding, air bladder is elongating ( or disappearing), and they are having trouble swimming. Has any one seen this before? I have had guppies for over 20 years and have never seen this!
NO SMARTASSES PLEASE!!!!

Please help! My beta fish(which I don't know is a male or female) has a big white, pearly colored bubble that looks like embryo on its finn. And every once in awhile, there is a silver sack at the top of the tank which my friends and I thought was just poop. (but now I'm thinking it's an egg!) Am I totally crazy, or is my fish pregnant?

i always end up taking apart the whole tanking and cleaning it. I am guessing its algae but im not sure i have a 10 gallon coldwater aquarium with goldfish inside and i would like to know how to prevent this green gunk from forming, as i know im not supposed to have to take apart the whole aquarium to clean it, but with this green algae it seems like there is no other way

In the past 6 to 9 months, I have twice found piles of what appear to be piles of scales in the tank where one of my Chiclids is. The fish appears to be healthy and eatting well. I've had it for more than a year and it is getting large. The first time there were multiple fish in the tank, this last time, this Chiclid was and still is the only fish in the tank.

Kind of like the clean/dirty magnet you can put on a dishwasher.
Any thoughts on where to find this?
