I got a new 5 gallon tank for xmas for the office, and it has a pump filter and i got a heater for it (because our office gets kinda chilly in the winter time), and the gravel...... I'm used to fish, so i don't need info on how to take care of them, i just want to know what kinds of freshwater fish you'd put in a new tank if you had the opportunity?

wow, thanks guys, ,,, i would prefer not to get fancy or fantailed goldfish for the office, simply because they live too long - up to 20 years, and they need a minimum of 10 gallons per fish once they start to get bigger. I have them at the house...... :D

In a 5 gallon, I wouldnt reccommend more than 2 guppies, or neons. Whatever it is, it would need to be very small.. or a single betta would probably be very happy in a 5 gallon. Definitly not goldfish, as they can grow up to a foot long if they're not stunted, and not anything the poster above mentioned, they obviously didnt realize your tank size. Or if they did, I bet they have a lot of dead fish!!! :p

A lot of the fish mentioned aren't really suitable for a 5 gallon tank. Even though the 1 inch per gallon rule can apply to tetras and small fish, it doesn't apply to a tank that small. Tetras are schoolers, and they need swimming room which a 5 gallon tank just doesn't have.
So, your options are limited, but are as follows:
1 male betta OR 1 female betta and 1 african dwarf frog OR 2 ghost shrimp
3 cherry barbs
3 white cloud minnows and a mystery snail
Or if your tank has a fluorescent light, you could get lots of plants and lots of cherry shrimp.

Cheap ones. When starting a new tank the mortality rate is high until the tank gets established. Strangly enough it is easier to care for a larger tank than a small one. With just 5 gallons, you have to be very careful not to add too many fish. Five small fish is ideal, and if you have more than 10 you will have problems.

I didn't see anyone mention tetra. A few neon tetra or glass fish might not be too terrible.
I'd say guppies/mollies/platies/swordtails,though,like the majority of everyone else. A trio of guppies and a couple of ghost shrimp to clean up would be lovely.

ALWAYS start a new fresh water tank with minnows. Regular every day minnows, from a Bait shop. Do not put fish you want to keep in it until the minnows have established a bio in the water. Then remove the minnows and put in your good fish.

guppies, barbs, shrimp, african dwarf frogs, platys, tetras. i'd say a betta too but bettas can't be kept with tetras, guppies, or barbs but they can be kept with all short finned fish and non aggressive fish like platys. I have 2 ghost shrimp, one female betta, and one african dwarf frog in my 2.5 gallon tank.
