i have a koi/goldfish pond and my fish have done exceptionally well, they seem very healthy and have grown from 1 1/2" in length, to about 10" in approximately 1 year. i would like to provide a natural enviornment for breeding purposes. what do i need for this to happen? how long before i see results under the right conditions?

I saw this thing come out of my mystery snail. I also saw it come out when it got above water. It looked like it was using it to breath! Is it a penis sheath or is it just part of its respitory system?

Hi guys,
I have a beautiful purple female betta fish. I've had her for about a year now. She has a very bad case of abdominal dropsy. Her abdomin is bloated, but her scales don't stick out that much. Her left gill functions when I give her once-weekly salt baths, but other than that it has very little movement. The fish is in a small container so I'll know where she is if she dies. I lost a fish to this EXACT thing in August (even the gill thing). Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this painful and should I perform euthanization?

My local aquatics shop says i should keep a low level of salt in my tropical freshwater aquarium water at all times.
I've read on various fishkeeping sites that this is not a good idea and should only be used as a tonic when fish are ill.
My tank contains general community fish.
Any advice on this subject would be very welcome.

I stopped by the pet store looking or a 5 and a half gallon tank for my betta. While I was there I also wanted to get a ghost shrimp to act as a scavenger. Instead, the salesman told me a little red claw crab will have a better chance of surviving. So I got one. So far the two are living happily together, the betta spends most of the time above and the crab, when not climbing on the artificial plants, will hang around on the bottom.
My questions are:
-is it true that red claw crab actually like a bit of salt in the aquarium? If yes, what would be the best compromise, as I do not want it to negatively affect the betta
-if I don't think he is getting enough food from scavenging, can I drop maybe a pea in there? What food pellets would you recommend?
-does he absolutely need something to climb onto and hang on the surface?
Here is a picture of my set-up.

They take turns hitting at each other until one of them dies. I have had these fish for over a year, and they`ve always loved being around each other before.

I have an Arrowhead Crab (Arrow Crab) in a saltwater fish tank.

His bottom sometimes "opens up" like a very small clamshell on a hinge. The little flap that opens is perhaps 1/8 inch in diameter.

The crab puts his pincer claws in there as if picking out food (or doing something)

Any idea what part of the crab's anatomy I am looking at or what is going on? I am guessing maybe this is an egg sac or maybe preparation for molting, but this has been going on for several days?

they are the size of baby snails but appear to have little legs and move faster then any snail I have seen. They live in the gravel on the bottom of the tank and come out in the dark and stick to the glass. They appear to "hop" around.

My aquarium is about 10 days old and has had fish in it about a week (I used Cycle to mature the bacteria levels quickly so I could add fish after 2 days). The nitrite levels are showing as 'harmful' - ie not good over long periods for the fish. How long will it be before the 2nd type of bacteria kicks in to convert the nitrite to nitrate? And is there anything I can do to speed it up? The 4 fish seem to be ok, perhaps breathing a little quickly.

My goldfish has outgrown his little round bowl, so i bought a proper tank with filter etc, about 6 times the size of the bowl. i also got 2 small goldfish to go in there with him as a bit of company. All the fish ignore each other, theres no fighting going on, but my original fish spends all his time swimming up and down the length of the tank. At first i thought it was because he was excited at having space to be able to swim in, but its been going on for 2 days now. Someone told me that if you see animals in a zoo going up and down, its because theyre on the verge of a breakdown - do you think my fish is unhappy or just making the most of his new space?
