Well any fish with a long lifespan will last long if you take care of it properly. Goldfish for example average 20 years when well cared for and the record is 43. Most people can't keep them past 3 months.
Oscars and most big cichlids are long lived as are pirhannas. Rummy nose tetras live a long time as to black phantoms. The majority of catfish do as well.
If you have a 200 + gallon tank you could get some arwonas.
But I'd go for goldfish but first RESEARCH their proper care.

Freshwater at cold / room temperature? Nothing beats a goldfish, they're tiny carps. Get the coolest one(s) you can find, but without those weird bugging eyes or brains or big bellies.
Tropical freshwater? Zebra danio. They've lived on the space station with the astronauts, and can stand water which would kill anything else.
Saltwater? Get a damsel (the 'other' fish from Finding Nemo). They can stand poor saltwater, sometimes. They're kind of like the Zebra danios of saltwater.

the fisk that I had that lasted for almost 10 years is an OSCAR! They are very beautiful fish but be ready to up grade it's tank as it grows. They get really big and they eat gold fish. So if you have a soft spot for the feeders than it probobly would not be the fish for you. But they are VERY smart as well they get to know you and will be very friendly and in my case it used to do tricks for it's food.

Go to the bait shop and buy minnows and put them in your tank and watch what happens.
Your filter will stop sliming and the water will get clean.
Minnows have been known to feed on an algae bacteria that grow in tanks and they will help keep it pure and clean and this is a known fact!
I have three dozen Minnows in my fish tank and I haven't had to replace my filter for a month now.
Bacteria in your water will kill your fish. The less bacteria the better the results. Chemicals work, but not as good as Minnows.
