They take turns hitting at each other until one of them dies. I have had these fish for over a year, and they`ve always loved being around each other before.

I had 4, am now down to 3, lots of plants in the tank, and only tankmate is a male guppy, who completely ignores them. also, would neon tetra disease make them kill each other? ( if they had it)

Sounds like something is stressing them.
What other fish are in the tank? Are there lots of plants(real or fake)?
Also, how many neons do/did you have?
Neon tetra disease will not make them do that.
Your problem is that neons need groups of 6 or more. They are not happy so they are fighting.

I also think that those are fighting males. You sometimes get that behaviour when neons come into spawn and you do have too few.
You might be able to solve it by adding more neon tetras and more plants so the tetras can hide from each other if they want to - and if they are in spawn you might get young ones, although they are avid egg eaters.
Females sometimes get on better (though not always.) Mature/inspawn females are often bigger and they have fatter tummies, it makes the blue line look crooked.
You can sometimes tell if they have neon disease by looking at where the tail becomes the tail-fin. If that looks yellow then it's best not to buy the neon.
I do hope that this will help, good luck.

might want to be doing that for breeding - do you've different fish with the neons? ascertain there is no fin rot - in the different case it truly is amazingly superb habit for a neon tetra. For breeding if there is not sufficient hiding spots, they could do unusual such issues as that. might want to be from inbreeding that the aggressive one has a neurological challenge. might want to also verify the meals you're giving them to verify they don't look to be getting too a lot nutrition C of their weight-loss plan.

You probably have a few males that have come of age and are competing for territory or females. I am no fish expert but Tetras are a pretty inexpensive fish that you shouldn't plan on having around for many years anyway.
If you want a fish that is going to live a long time, look at any type of cat fish (irridescent sharks as they are known) or pangasius catfish are very attractive and live for years. Most fish called sharks that are related to catfish will live a long time.
Tetras are hearty, but don't have a very long life expectancy.

Tetras are schooling fishes. It's always best to have five or more of the same kind of tetra.
