We are cycling our tank (it's been running for 3 weeks now) and still having issues with ammonia being around a 1.0. How long will that last?
How do I lower it? We have 3 new koi coming and I don't want them to get ammonia shock.

There are no fish currently living in this tank. It REALLY needs to be "disinfected" in a manner that won't leach chemicals into the porous parts of the tank's decorations, or the gravel. Help??

OK this is how it goes, i have two gold fish in a 20 gal tank with two HOB (hang on the back) filters, and the tank has been going since the summer of 2005. I just bought a black mystery snail, i noticed that is shell is turning white and pretty much decaying. I read some where that snails need calcium to maintain their shells. (please feel free to tell me anything else snails need to maintain thier shell.

I want to get 2-3 for my 29 gallon, but
1. How do I feed them? They're blind!
2. Will they be peaceful?
3. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being very delicate and 1 being as easy as a betta, how easy are they to care for?
4. Any other info I need?

Here's what happened, My two black mollies decided to spring a surprise on us when they gave birth to 18 fry. I skipped work in excitement and went to an acquarium shop to pick up a tank and all accessories. I bought some small river stones washed them thoroughly, inserted a water heater (to 28 degrees centi) and popped all my rescued mollies in it. Two days later all of them are swimming funny (that is those that have survived -about 8). I might mention here that I had inserted 4 pregnant guppies into the same tank as well (capacity about 20 litres). Aprt from the 7 dead mollies, 3 guppies died. I added a general treatment dose for itch etc. the bottles u get in the store. All the remaining fry seem to be swimming funny, almost as if they are exhausted. I feel morally responsible for the fish and desperately need your help !!!

I have 6 Green Tiger Barbs 2 platyes, and 1 dwarf guorami. My 29 gallon tank is just under a month old. It is currently still cycling. I now know that some people think it is cruel to cycle with fish, but I don't really have a choice now. I was told when I bought the fish that they would be fine. This was from a very popular local aquarium store. Anyway, currently ammonia is at 0 and nitrites are at about .5 ppm. I already did a 15% water change today. When I got home today, I noticed that the smallest green tiger barb was swimming alone near the top of the water. He is very lethargic and seems to have little white dots all over him. They look almost like bubbles. All of the other fish are fine. Is this a result of nitrite poisoning? Is it some type of parasite? Is this contagious? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I got a new 55 gallon tank; it was used traded it for a an old pc. Its my 1st 55 gallon, I have 4 10 gallons, and a zillion 1/2 gallon mason jars.

Anyway; I am in the process of setting it up, my plan was to transfer my 12 female bettas, 2 catfish, and snails to it. Because right now they are all in a 10 gallon.

(Yes yes I know 1" per gallon, the bettas however are a bit different in their upkeep and I have been monitering the water very closely and doing water changes every 5 days. I wasn't expecting to get the last 2 females as a perk from a shipment of bettas that arrived. None of the fish are ill. And some of the betta are like 1/2 inch as is one catfish)

So anyway, this 55 gallon has an undergravel filter, which runs via an air pump. I've been using powerfilters in my tanks, and am unfamilair with this particular filter type, is this acceptable, or should I get a power filter?

(On a side note; is a 55 gallon a better breeding tank then a 10/20 gallon?)

I have two goldfish in one tank. The larger, older one has had these white cottony things covering both his eyes, while the other has not, ever. I put the fungus treatment drops in the tank, and they didn't seem to help. Then I put the Ick tablets in, and he seems friskier, but the cottony growth on his eyes is still there. Should I treat the tank again for Ick? I've had this silly fish for about 3 years, now, and I'd hate to see him suffer or die!

I know its a dumb question but I keep reading that you can have guppy's and other fish with them and i've always been told you can't have them with other fish. So I was wondering if I could put one with my Serpae Tertras. I have 7 of them a little under one inch in size.

I have a 10 gallon tank in my bedroom. I've had a few fish in it and an algae eater. Well my tank water has turned really green. I took everything out and cleaned it about a month ago. And its green again. Ive gone to Petco and they gave me these tablets to put in it. It helped for a lil bit, but its green again.

What could it be?

I was at a pet shop with a friend the other day and I saw something very sad. There were a lot of fish there that were just in little dishes... like what potato salad comes from the store in... just about 1 cup of water. Anyway, the fish not only had no room to move about, the water was not properly aerated, they just had a hole punched in the top of their dish lid, but since they were stacked up, I can't see how the bottom fish could breathe. The water in the dish had not been cleaned for some time, and there were obviously very ill -- even dead!-- fish just lying there in dishes on the shelf underneath a big hot light.

This is all just terrible to me! I already volunteer quite a lot at the local animal shelter, but I don't know what to do... they don't take fish, and I haven't the money or resources to care for them. What can I do to help the poor little fish?

There was a boy standing on a corner selling fish.

He was saying, "Dam fish for sale, dam fish for sale."

A preacher walked up and asked why he was calling them dam fish.

The kid said, "I caught them at the dam, so they're dam fish."

The preacher bought some, took them home and asked his wife to cook the dam fish.

His wife looked at him in bewilderment and said, "Preachers aren't supposed to talk like that."

The preacher explained why they were dam fish, and she agreed to cook them. When dinner was ready and everyone was sitting down, the preacher asked his son to pass him the dam fish.

His son replied, "That's the spirit dad. Pass the ****** potatoes!"

I have an empty 3 litre Crown Royal bottle (flat sided) that I would like to use as a betta bowl. I will have to cut off the top to make it accessible for cleaning, feeding, etc. Has anyone had bettas in bottles, and what are some concerns?
