I have 6 Green Tiger Barbs 2 platyes, and 1 dwarf guorami. My 29 gallon tank is just under a month old. It is currently still cycling. I now know that some people think it is cruel to cycle with fish, but I don't really have a choice now. I was told when I bought the fish that they would be fine. This was from a very popular local aquarium store. Anyway, currently ammonia is at 0 and nitrites are at about .5 ppm. I already did a 15% water change today. When I got home today, I noticed that the smallest green tiger barb was swimming alone near the top of the water. He is very lethargic and seems to have little white dots all over him. They look almost like bubbles. All of the other fish are fine. Is this a result of nitrite poisoning? Is it some type of parasite? Is this contagious? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I believe that tiger barbs and platyes are compatible. The barbs don't really bother them at all. I think they swim fast enough to avoid the nips.

Sounds like you have ick (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis). It is very contagious. You will have to treat all the fish. Your local pet store should have medicines that you can put in the water. The mortality rate with this disease in its advanced stage is quite high, expect to lose the infected barb.

Funny thing I have a 29 gallon tank and i have 3 Green tiger barbs and 3 tiger barbs and 1 Bala shark. Well i only do 10% changes i think that 15% is too much this will go away. My green tigers sometimes stay right by the heater or the filter for a day right after i do the water change. They just have to adjust to the water. By the way, im not to sure about this, aren't platies community fish? I don't think they can go with Barb or gouramies. I really want to get 2 kissing gouramies. Good Luck! By the way if he starts to get little white spots on him theeen you can say he has ick. But dont waste your money. Look at him closely.

Look closely to see if it's bubbles or looks like grains of sand. If sandy looking it's ick. Do a 50% water change cleaning the gravel in the process and add salt. You need to add a tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons and raise the tank temp to 86-88 F. This alone can cure ick over time, but I would still say to add an ick medicine from the same store to your tank. just use it per the instructions on the bottle. Ich is easily cured if treated quickly but can be a real killer and problem if you let it go for even a few days.

Your situation is the tank did no longer cycle till now you further fish. biking the tank is the main severe technique till now getting and including fish. If I have been you i could return the fish and seem up on line a thank you to cycle a fish tank. yet another ingredient: do in no way have confidence the puppy shop workers. they many times do no longer understand something approximately fish. that's greater valuable to do your individual study. The Rainbow shark desires a minimum of a fifty 5 gallon so it won't artwork on your tank. The tiger barbs might desire to be in a college of a minimum of 6. the single barb that's appearing ill is plagued by the tank being uncycled. The mollies and the platies could be in a team of a minimum of three as nicely. Like I mentioned i could return the fish and examine up on a thank you to do a fishless cycle. then you quite adult men could study fish you like till now determining to purchase them. stable success :]
