Hi!

I have a betta fish I got about 3 wks ago. He's living in a 1/2 gal bowl and I change the water everyother day treating it first. He won't eat the pellets I bought him; he'll go to them when after I've put them in, then swim away, is disgust almost. Then when they start to fall to the gravel he'll go to one, swallow it, then spit it out.

He also seems a little lazy in his bowl; sometimes he lays on the gravel not moving, then swims about slowly. He also goes to the top for air every once in a while.

I also noticed a little grey looking patch on his face so I figured it was fungi and started treating him for it. But it doesn't seem to help.

Where am I going wrong? Someone please help me.

I just did a reading on my TAP water and it was around a 7ppm. I didn't realize before that tap water would put in the very thing I am trying to take out with water changes? Is this something people generally don't worry about since it equals out to something safe? In my 29 gallon tank my nitrate stays around 40 with 5 diamond tetra, 1 rainbow shark, 1 angel (3 inch) and 2 cory cats I have a few plants in there as well.

Should I get more plants? I'd rather not use any chemicals if I can get away with it. I don't know how my new 120 gallon will work out after I change water and add my first new fish after fishless cycling. There are a few plants in there but I would like to get 3 dojo loaches for my boyfriend in one of the tanks and I hear they really like to tear up some plants. Is there any other alternative besides chemicals or plants???

Thanks in advance!!!

I bought a 55 gallon starter kit from petsmart the other day and when i set it up i realized that the heater they gave me isn't powerfull enough to heat my tank. It sits in a room with no heating so we have a bunch of heater in there but the temp fluctuates pretty often. I am looking for a heater or 2 that will be able to withstand the temp changes. Any suggestions?

I am keeping my female betta in a 1/2 gallon fish bowl. There are many factors that have hendered my from upgrading her situation (it's a long story) so I figured I would make the best of the situation she is already in. I figured I would start with the low temp. problem. I found this heater for fish bowls on the internet.( Link below)

We just bought a new 29 gallon aquarium for freshwater fish. We then bought a Maxima Air Pump, and the pet store employee told us we could get an air stone or bubble wand to connect ot the air pump. We decided instead to purchase an under gravel filter that has three uplift tubes, since that's what I used to have in an aquaruim years ago. It's what I'm familiar with. The employee looked at us funny when we went to purchase the under gravel filter. Should we not have gotten that? I'm reading online that they may not be the best.

So what's better? The under gravel filters? Or air stones? I don't really like how bubble wands look when they create a huge wall of bubbles, but I wouldn't mind just a tiny stream of bubbles in the tank. Help!

I got a Male Peacock Cichlid this week & his left eye was scraped in a violent amateur netting. The guy at the store practically dragged him across the gravel sideways. Over the past 2 days, his eye has been covered with a white film that bulges out over the eye and appears to have a hole in the center of it... The eye underneath looks intact. It looks like a puss barrier encasing the eye. Its very puffy & large. Like tripple the distance that his other eye extends from his body.

Is there a reccommended medicine for this sort of thing? I started putting melaflix in the water, but I don't know that its the correct thing to use.

He's one of these....

Unfortunately my digital camera was stepped on recently, so I can't take a picture of his affliction to share. I haven't had to deal with many injured fish in my time. I got him for a steal (he was in the wrong tank at petsmart & I got him for $4 - he is an adult)

I'll soon be starting a 10-gallon aquarium with six mystery snails; no fish. I was told by someone that I'll need to use a 20-30 gallon filter because snails are messy. We currently have a 10-gallon filter. Any advice?

You have all been so helpful so far, and I thought I had everything figured out, but now my boyfriend has a problem with the fish I want to get and I want to keep him happy with the tank too. In my new 120 gallon tank I had decided to go with:

6 long fin rosy barbs
4 pictus cats
6 angels
1 albino shark or rainbow

to start with... but he loves cichlids. I do not know if there are any that can go with the fish I want? I heard maybe Rams could. He's mad at me since I returned a gold algea eater that was being mean to my other fish in my 29 gallon tank (had him for 5 months before he got mean) I didn't know it was his favorite fish in that tank until I told him it was gone. Dojo loach instead maybe?

Another quick question: In that 29 gallon I now have 5 diamond tetras, 1 rainbow shark (will move to the 120 gallon soon), 1 angel fish, 2 corys (going to get 3 more) Is there a way to squeek in a more colorful fish in there? All those are silver and black, no color.

Thank you!!!
