I bought a 55 gallon starter kit from petsmart the other day and when i set it up i realized that the heater they gave me isn't powerfull enough to heat my tank. It sits in a room with no heating so we have a bunch of heater in there but the temp fluctuates pretty often. I am looking for a heater or 2 that will be able to withstand the temp changes. Any suggestions?

Ebo-jagger is a great brand if you can get a sumbersible one.
Anyway, I suggest that you get two or three OVERSIZED heaters and put one at either end of the tank and one in the middle. That should keep the tank stable.
That said, if your room is changing temperatures steeply and rapidly, then you may not be able to stablize the tank temp.
How about a room heater in addition to the tank heaters?

Most people recommend 2 watts of heater per gallon of tank. In a unheated room, you might double that. Temperature will fluctuate some due to the way most heaters work. An electronically controlled heater is a bit more stable than typical heaters, but even then there is some room for fluctuations. I would suggest you use 3-4 heaters rather than one large one in this situation. They will allow for more even heating and better control.
You can also try placing the tank on a piece of styrofoam as insulation as well as putting a peice on the back and even the sides. While most heat lose occurs from the top, it wouldn't hurt at all.

Any good quality submersible heater. They generally all have thermostats in them. A good one should cost you about 20$-30$ . I would suggest two of them. You will get a more even heat. Also, if one should go out for some reason you will have a back up heater.

Get another one to go in there. Its kind of you get what you pay for thing. You need at least 120 watt and maybe 2 of those would hold a constant temp. Cudos for you gettting heaters! GF need at least 75 degrees to thrive in! Don't listen to anyone telling you that you don't need a heater. I live in Texas and I use heat in my tank year round, my fish grow and thrive. I keep it at constant 78 degrees.

Yeah take it back! That exact same tank you just bought for $200 at petco, I just got at super walmart for $140. Just buy a good heater at a fish store. Not petco!

you need a 200 watt submergable heater they work good. i bought a cheap one and it works great for my 55gallon. it stays at the temp i put it at.

you can get a heater
but i would make the water temperature hotter, so that they're not cold it's the water they live in not the room
so --- make the water warmer because heater--water will still be cold (fish)
