I have two goldfish. They are pretty much the same size but one is bigger than the other. However, the smaller goldfish ate the tail off my bigger goldfish! I had to separate the two, because the larger goldfish wasn't able to swim quickly away from the smaller goldfish. Why is it doing this and how can I prevent it? I want to put the fish back together.

I have two ryukin goldfish that are having problems. My orange ryukin is losing its headgrowth on one side if it's head and it has gone clear. Also my white fish is turning a murky yellow. all my levels are within balance but my ph level is at 7.8 (within range) and when i try to lower the ph it shoots back up. I have replaced the biowheel in my filter (was not working) and the food but it is still getting worse. can anyone help?

Currently I have a 25watt top fin heater in my tank. It doesn't have a thermometer on the heater, just markings for amount of heat. I have a separate thermometer in the tank. when i first got the heater, the lowest setting kept the tank at 78 for awhile. And then later on in the month it crept to 80 degrees. It's now near the end of the month and i think it's now 82 degrees. I'm afraid that the temperature will just keep on rising.

I'm thinking about purchasing a new heater, one that has a thermometer built into the heater. Does anyone have any heater brand suggestions and how many watts I should use?

I have an adult male betta that I got about 5 months ago. I think he may be constipated and also have fin rot. Up until now, he has been doing great. About a week ago I noticed that his stomach was very bloated, so I haven't been feeding him very much, and he doesn't eat it anyways. I also noticed that he has a large tear in his tail and his other fins look ragged on the end. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!! I have done some research, but every site tells me something different, so if someone can tell me what I need to do for my betta to get better, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would like a tropical fish but then I would need a bigger fish tank because I have recently noticed that they only sell heaters for 2.5-5 gallons which means my tank is too small. :-( I've had a goldfish in the the past...but still not sure what is best for the size of my tank?? Help!

Hi all,

i currently have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with dual filtration (30 gallon whisper filter + 10 gallon whisper filter). In my tank i have a variety of plants and the following fish: 4 guppies, 2 albino cory catfish, 1 baby whale, 1 mustard spot pleco, 1 apistogramma borelli, 1 yo yo loach, 1 rainbow shark. I want to move the entire setup to a 55 gallon freshwater setup. How do I do that while minimizing fish loss? And should I get two 50 gal Whisper filtration units? Finally, i wanted to add a black ghost knife, and 2-4 blue/god ram cichlids--any problems with that? Thanks!!

I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with 6 green tiger barbs, 2 platyes and 1 dwarf gourami. My filter is a biowheel for a tank up to 50 gallons. I have a couple questions. 1)How often do I need to change the cartridges? 2) There is a slot to put in an extra cartridge so you can use two at once. Is this really necessary? Will I have to change the cartridges if I do this? Will my water really be cleaner if I use two?

I have a 2.5 gallon tank with 3 small tiger barbs. They've been in it about 2 weeks now.

This morning I woke up to study for an exam at 9:30. I fed them and they ate and everything was ok. As I was leaving I noticed one of them had died, I would have taken him out but I had to go to the exam right then. I came back an hour later and prepared to take him out when I noticed he was stuck in the filter...breathing. I wiggled him out and he swam around slowly for a while, but now you could never tell anything happened.

Is it possible that being stuck in the filter sucked water up and forced it through his gills reviving him? Almost like fish CPR?

(p.s. I am completely serious about this! I'm kind of freaked out that my fish died but now is ok an hour later)

The water collects behind the filter and overflows. It seems as if the water isn't going through the filter at the same rate that it's being pumped in. I've cleaned the filter and that didn't help..... I don't know what to do! I want to avoid buying a new pump if possible. It's a 10 gallon and there are no speed settings on the pump.

I am interested in getting a male betta for my home. As I live in a cooler house (68 degrees...sometimes 66!) I was thinking a small 1 or 2 gallon tank with a little heater? I know bettas do not like cool water. Also, what are some other types of fish that are compatible with a male betta? Any help is appreciated.

I bought fish last night. A couple of electric yellow cichlids. And when I woke up this morning I noticed fish looked liked they were sucking air from the top. ANd when i put my finger in the tank to see if they would swim away they just sat there and sank and would swim back up and do the same. I didn't have a filter in there last night, but i bought one in this morning after I seen them. I figured it was because they didn't have air. Well even after i put the filter in, they then strated swimming tot he bottom of the tank and really fast back up. And tried jumping out. I'm scared they might die, somebody know why this behavier?

I'm wanting to install an aquarium in my wall that connects my living room and bedroom so that you can see it from both sides. Someone I used to work with did this in his home and I've tried to contact him for help but he has moved out of state and I can't reach him. I don't have a clue where to start. If you have ever done this and have any ideas, tips, etc, please share. Thanks!

Okay - I don't have my water parameters, because I'm at work (so you don't have to ask for them) - but they are *fine*. I test them weekly and ammonia, pH, nitrates, nitrites, etc. are all on par. I do 20-25% weekly water changes, keep my Mollies in brackish water and am basically someone who truly tries to be the best fish keeper possible (even though I definitely have made my mistakes in the past).

History:

I lost my entire tank of adult Mollies when I converted my 2 10G tanks into 1 29G tank. Apparently the way I converted the tanks freaked/stressed my fish out and then came down with a reverse or deflated swim bladder problem (all of them, surprisingly enough) and within a month, they began to be unable to swim (one soon after another).

They would keep to the bottom, just flapping their side fins and their entire underbody would be almost "paralyzed". They would stop feeding (not able to swim to the surface and not even able to dig for falling food, until they ended up passing away. The diagnosis: Deflated/Reverse Swim Bladder Disease. (This is a "probable" diagnosis I got from a woman who is a zookeeper specializing in aquatics that happened to be at the LFS when I was there trying to explain the situation to get a diagnosis to the manager of the fish department. She works for the LFS company, so she became interested in my story and after talking to me for quite some time, determined that is what she thought the problem was.)

Current Tank:

Anyways --- I began to restock my tank with 2M Mollies - I thought 1 was F, sheesh - you'd think I could genderize them by now, but it is a very "fancy tail" Molly and I didn't look carefully enough to see it had a gonopodium "hidden" in its other "fancy fins". I bought them last Monday. I thought the two of them were doing fine, so yesterday I added in 2F Dalmatian Mollies. Water tests are still coming back perfectly fine as of this morning.

Besides the 2 Cream Mollies I added last Monday, I already had 4 juveniles in the 29G from previous Molly pregnancies (their mothers having passed away in the death tank episode mentioned above). I also had 7 "baby" Mollies (< 3 months old). All of these babies/juveniles and the 1 "fancy fin" M Molly are doing great. The Dalmatians are also "adjusting". They were sort of hiding earlier and the "fancy fin" Molly decided to "get to know them" (If you know what I mean, that's how I realized - duh, he's a he and not a she.)

The Sick Molly:

The 1M Creamsicle Molly that I bought last Monday is now showing symptoms of the "deflated swim bladder" problem that my other Mollies died of. He is staying at the bottom of the tank (hiding under the bubbler wand). This morning when I fed everyone, they were busy eating and he didn't move. When I came back 15 minutes later, he was trying to surface and he was severely struggling. His two side fins were working, but his tail fin and underbody were not appearing to be functioning. He fell back down and sort of bopped on the rocks. When I came back another 5-10 minutes later, he was back laying on the rocks under the bubbler.

What on earth can be done??? Has *anyone* had this problem? He has NO physical signs of parasites, Ich/Velvet, Dropsy/bloat or any other fish diseases. If I don't do something today, I feel he is going to die for sure. I will probably end up taking him back to the LFS to see if they can "save him" because I don't think this deflated/reverse swim bladder can be "fixed", where the other swim bladder disease can be fixed sometimes.

I am going to be posting this on as many fish forums as I can find, so please don't think I am "spamming". I just really would like to find someone else who has had this "deflated swim bladder problem" in their Mollies or other fish.

Please post here or even email me at ldorrington@earthlink.net -- I will be checking periodically from work all day to see if I can get some suggestions/advice.

To the best of our knowledge they weren't particularly old. Only clue we have is that their water turned very murky the day before and was like that when their bodies were found, despite being changed. There didn't appear to be any damage to the scales or anything. Thanks.
