I have two goldfish. They are pretty much the same size but one is bigger than the other. However, the smaller goldfish ate the tail off my bigger goldfish! I had to separate the two, because the larger goldfish wasn't able to swim quickly away from the smaller goldfish. Why is it doing this and how can I prevent it? I want to put the fish back together.

There is a very simple and age old proven process to stop bullying in the same species of fish. Try this:

Take the bully out, put him in a temporary tank/bowl for at-least 72 hours, and then re-introduce him back to the old tank... Hoopla...he becomes the new-comer now, and would not be bullying anymore.

Been there and Done that with more than a dozen of various species of bullies I have come across my hobby as a fish keeper, and never failed to get amazed with the result and success.

You need to treat your wounded goldfish with Melafix for 3 days, and the fintail will grow back very fast. No worries.

Seperate the hurt fish and add some antibiotics (melafix, maracyn) to help heal and ward off infection. If the tail starts turning black, it is healing. Don't do this in the main tank because antibiotics also kill off the good bacteria. Goldfish don't have temperments, in all my years of owning and breeding I never once had one with a personality. Sorry. They will bite at anything that could possibly be food, and if the other fish just sits there and takes it, it will be eaten.
Another concern is that your bigger fish didn't move. All varieties of goldfish (with the exception of those with impeeding deformities) should be very active and on the move all the time. If they are listless then it is an indication of water quality issues or a disease of some sort. You need to figure out what is wrong with your fish (testing the water is a good first step) and maybe you will be able to bring the bigger fish back to good health and reintroduce them.

Well, for starters, goldfish are gluttons. They usually try to suck on everything and anything to see whether or not they can eat it. Your smaller goldfish trying to eat the larger goldfish's tail would be perfectly fine if he failed at the task. But.. Since you say he's actually been getting pieces of it then he might just keep doing it since to him, its food now.

Try seperating them for a while or untill the larger ones tail grows out. Then try pairing them again.. If it doesnt work then it just wasnt meant to be. By the way, why type of goldfish are they?

goldfish have different temperments. some are just nippy and some are not. right now i have a killer that i can't put anything with because he nips fins off -- he doens't just fray them. i think i might have to euthanize him because he is just plain mean.
