Even though Freshwater fish needs salinity in the water to improve gill movement and overall health.
Too much, as in a Marine environment, will kill them.

For one thing, they would probably end up with ick, which will make them very sick.......and the shock. You don't ever put fresh water fish in a salt water tank. Fresh water fish cannot handle that. That is why they have so many different tanks in a pet/fish store.

Their osmotic potentials will be screwed up and they'll die.. horribly. As they are hypotonic and the water is hypertonic the fishes cells will dehydrate water (via osmosis- the level of dehydration will be proportionate with the concentration of salt in the water) and the cells will ultimately lose functionality -> Death.

If you suddenly put a salt water fish species into fresh water the opposite happens and the cells take in water and swell, ultimately [usually] fissuring (I couldn't really imagine much of a worse way to die myself).

They will eventually die but, depending on the type of fish and water quality, they would last a lot longer than a fresh water fish in saltwater.

It depends on the species.

Most will die slowly from osmotic regulation complications.
Some more brackish species will live a little longer.
Some like sole / flounder actually start life in freshwater & prefer salt-water as adults.

As a general rule, it will kill most freshwater fish eventually. Its a bad idea. Its like torture & its not responsable pet ownership.

Well, actually it depends alot on the fish and the amount of salt. Im pretty sure a swordtail might live there for a pretty good amount of time before dying.

Get ready for a fish fry. Same thing that would happen if I put you in a room filled with cyanide gas instead of regular air.

They would die a painful death. But you can't hear fish scream then, can you, so it's ok.....

They would probably die from too much salt in their diet.
