My boyfriend and I just bought a 29 gallon fish tank. We're trying to decide what fish to put in there. He likes bigger fish, but I like the smaller fish. For example, he likes how cichlids look, since they're so big. But I love little fish, like tiger barbs. Any advice on what big fish and little fish go well together? (I obviously don't want the little fish to get eaten.)

I want to start a saltwater aquarium, but I just found out how much money it takes. Are there any cost cutting tips? Do the cheap protein skimmers work? Are expensice lights necessary?

I have him in a 10 gallon tank with 3 other fancy goldfish although they are all orange. I have had this set up for almost 7 years now. He is not acting any differently. He is eating normally. As are the other fish. The rest of his color is still the same deep black. Has anyone heard of this? Any advice please.

My friend owns two small fish which he keeps in a small fish bowl. There are no decorations...just the bowl, some foggy water, and the fish. Anyway, I noticed the fish both at the top of the bowl - not on their sides, they are perfectly alive. I watched them rapidly open and close their mouths - like they were sucking in, almost gasping, right at the surface so their mouths actually poked slightly above the surface when they "gasped". Is it possible that there isn't enough pure oxygen in the water so they are resorting to getting air at the top of the bowl?? does this make sense? I would imagine that fish might need to get air, and I would figure they'd go straight to the source - that is, the top of the tank where there is air. so, am I just a little bit imaginative or does this make sense? I tried explaining this to my friend, but he's convinced i'm crazy. So tell me, am I? I'd appreciate any help, and hopefully someone who knows a lot about fish can give me some words of wisdom.

This might be a stupid question, but I just brought freeze-dried brine shrimp for my little Betta. On the label it says "for freshwater & marine fish". I know that Bettas are tropical fish...So I'm wondering if there's a difference between "marine" and "tropical"? Perhaps I'm over-thinking this one :)

After getting 4 fish last week, I noticed that the water has started to become murky and the fish were acting lethargic. We have a filter, etc, so we're thinking the cigarette smoke from our apartment is being filtered into the tank. Also, two of the fish just died of ich, could this also have a correlation to the smoke?

I'll soon be receiving six mystery snails and plan on keeping them in a 10-gallon aquarium. Is it okay to keep a b.n. catfish in there too, or would it eat too much of the snails' food?

I just came home from work and I find out that a friend of the family gave my child 2 small goldfish while I was out. My husband put the fish in our tank without knowing if it was okay. I was told that you shouldn't mix them in the same tank,so now what do I do and should I take them out right away. I have a 10 gallon tank with 2 zebras and 1 guppy.

My female beta fish is having a very hard time swimming. She still is eating but with a struggle to swim to the food, it has to hit the bottom and takes her a while. She looks healthy and her color is great but she just can't swim. Can't swim to the top of the 1 gallon tank. Is this causing any pain to her? Any help with this would be appreciated.

I've had a male beta fish for about a month now, and he's been acting pretty odd lately...

he's in a 2.5 gallon tank with a hood and light. I was told by the people at the pet store that they need to be in the same water temp. when changing their water (for example, if the water he's in is 62 degrees, it should be 62 when I finish cleaning it and put him back in. When I first brought him home, the water was chilly (I'd guess 60ish) and I know they're supposed to have a heater, but will this harm him?

He has created a very large bubble nest, and is quite frisky with his bright orange plastic plant. I also heard I should buy him a live plant because it won't damage his fins, so I plan on that as well - any suggestions?

My main concern is that he is flaring up A LOT, and besides the constant rubbing against the fake plant, he is swimming quite quickly around the tank... he's pretty spazzy... is this okay, or do I need to calm him down?

I don't know much about tanks except we have benn maintaining a 10 gallon for alomost a year. This filter was givin with the tank and I was told was excellent. I have a bottom feeder and goldfish in the 10 gallon. How should I transfer over? How long should I let the tank run with just water before I put the fish in? I want to get some plants any suggestions? What about a heater I added one to my 10 gallon tonight as the tank came with a red fish yellow eyes seems to chase my goldfish. Also easiest direction to do it All. I put gravel down first then ? plant? then add water then do I add the stress coat? ANy other things I should buy?
Thank you all for help.

I have 2 mystery snails and 2 mollies in a 10 gallon tank that is only 2 weeks old (not fully cycled but headed there with conditioner liquid, bacteria liquid, and cycle liquid plus freshwater aquarium salt) My problem right now is that the Mollies are hogging the algae wafers that I put in for the mystery snails. Any advice on what to do about this?? I also have 2 guppies and 2 Danios in the tank and they eat along with the Mollies in the morinig (flake food) I was told to feed the snails in the evening when I turn off the light. Any advice is much appreciated!!

My problem is I need to find a siphon or a pump or whatever to clean up the food on the bottom of my aquarium. I have a 10 gallon tank with only 1 angel fish. I have the water filled and regularily clean the filter and pump so that the water remains somewhat clean but I hate the look of all the food on the rocks. I am wondering what kind of siphon can I purchase that will help me get rid of the remains at the bottom without having to change the whole thing. It would just simplify my life and help me enjoy my aquarium. Please help.

On the filter pumps, every once in a while there is white crusty deposits. What are they and how to keep them from getting there.
