On the filter pumps, every once in a while there is white crusty deposits. What are they and how to keep them from getting there.

Sounds to me like limestone or calcium deposits. I am not sure how to prevent them, but if you soak them in vinegar over night it will remove them. Possibly a water softener the before your filter pump would take care of the problem, but I'm not sure if that is possible to set up like that.

Is it in the water or out? If it's out of the water, it's probably hard water deposites. Easy as pie to clean; take a paper towel, soak it in vinegar and rub off the stains.
If they are in the water, it's probably uneaten pieces of food that got moldy. Just suck them out with with the gravel vac and be careful to feed less in the future.
