this happens to some goldfish. sometimes for no reason and sometimes because they did not get enough sunlight. he'll be fine, but you may want to put him somewhere where he'll get indirect sunlight. you should also give him an orange slice once a week. it has vitamins in it that goldfish need, plus they love them. just cut a slice and float it on top.

however, if he's showing signs of dying he's probably also sick. does he have any symptoms?

all this about not enough sunlight is c**p, what type of diet are you feeding it? fish do turn different colours ,Ive had loads, had goldfish that have turned white, koi that have changed colour, ghost koi, all sorts, imagine you've got black hair, what happens as you get older??? will you start turning grey? yes you will? check your food that you re feeding it, get a chemical kit and check the water for pH etc..what signs of dying is it showing, is it floating on its side or upside down, what?? cant really help if you don't tell us the signs??

Ok. Try putting it in sunlight, feeding it fish vitamins and changing the water. Make sure the water has sufficient oxygen and is an ideal temperature. This may help. However, if it doesn't improve in about 2 days-prepare for a toilet funeral. Good Luck

If it has like a white fluff on it it's likely to be a type of fungal disease commonly known as "fin-rot".

My advice is to get hold of some tank water purifier such as TetraClear. Change the water and apply the purifier as advised on the bottle.

Also, if you don't have a water filter system then I advise you get one of those as well.

I buy them by the dozen a couple of times a week for my catfish. They are pretty cheap. Under $4 a doz. Just go get some more and be happy. God bless your fish.

have you consulted a vet or your local aquarium shop? It sounds like he may have a fungal infection of some sort.
