I just came home from work and I find out that a friend of the family gave my child 2 small goldfish while I was out. My husband put the fish in our tank without knowing if it was okay. I was told that you shouldn't mix them in the same tank,so now what do I do and should I take them out right away. I have a 10 gallon tank with 2 zebras and 1 guppy.

take them out ASAP. fancy goldfish need 10gallons each when young and 20gallon for one when adults and 10 more gallons for everyone after that, so when your goldfish get older they'll need a 30gallon tank. however, if you have a common goldfish it will need to be in a pond. do you know what type it is? you might want to google goldfish types.

goldfish are cold water fish, zebras and guppies are tropical. they need different water temps.

goldfish are (as other answers have said) very dirty. they produce too much waste for most fish to handle and need large amounts of water because of their waste as well as their size.

I suggest taking the goldfish back and if the friend asks simply explain that you could not care for them properly, after all I'm sure you don't want to teach your kids to be irresponsible. they should understand. if you can't bare to part with them get a 30gallon tank for them with a good filter.

To be redundant, goldfish are dirty fish. Also, since the species of tropical fish and community fish vary, so do their temperaments. Goldfish are rowdy little aquatic pigs that love to shimmy and shake around the whole tank. Take that into consideration because if you are getting a fairly passive lot of fish, the goldfish can cause some stress in the beggining.

On an ingredient word, what variety of turtles do you have? There are merely some species which could incredibly be saved in a collection that super in a tank that small.

Goldfish are often considered dirty fish because of their body mass to length ratio. to put it simply they are fat so use alot of oxygen and poop alot more than a tropical fish of a simular length. they also have a specific diet compared to tropical fish and do much better on their own food . they can live on tropical fish food but tend to be duller in color and gain more weight. they also like a slightly cooler tank tghan most tropical fish so it is best to provide a seperate tank for them

If you have a good filter you really don't have to worry too much. They say don't mix them because goldfish are very dirty. Keep up good matienance and get a good filter and they all should be fine. Just keep your fish ratio to 1 inch of fish to 1 gallon of fresh water! Your tank will stay happy and healthier that way!

The goldfish should not be kept with tropicals. They need cooler water and rob the oxygen from the other fish. They probably wilol do0 well, but the others won't.

Goldfish are a dirty fish....in that the tank will get that way very soon. They also are very hungry pigs. Seperate them if you can. Don't flush them, they also are bad for the enviroment.
