They work the same. A skimmer is a skimmer is a skimmer. They all work on the same basic principal and it is hard to have one that will "wear out" quickly. Chances are your tank will be long gone by the time even a cheap skimmer wears out. It is a pump just like anything else.
Add:
Just because someone pays $3.99 at walmart for a black mollie, doesn't mean the ones others buy in different places for $.99 are any different. (ok the .99 cent ones are healthier!)
Look around. As with anything else, you can find them on sale. Ask your local fish store. A skimmer is a skimmer.

Yes, but they work like cheap protein skimmers and they don't last as long. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for :)
Try used; you can probably get a quality used skimmer for the price of a new cheap skimmer.

Yes but..... Cheap ones may not be designed as well as better models. I would go with Zoes suggestion or do some careful research and build your own. They are really rather simple devices to build at home.
