The water collects behind the filter and overflows. It seems as if the water isn't going through the filter at the same rate that it's being pumped in. I've cleaned the filter and that didn't help..... I don't know what to do! I want to avoid buying a new pump if possible. It's a 10 gallon and there are no speed settings on the pump.

Are your filters clogged or in backwards (however a backward filter will not stop the flow of water) try taking your filters out and see if this corrects the problem. If it does you have clogged filters. Toss them and get new ones.

Since it is a hang on the back this is basically gravety dropping water into your tank. If this continues to be a problem, try sliding your filters part way out.

If these do not correct the problem, see if you can return the entire filter for a new one.

Honestly, the filters are clogged.

You need to *change* the filter!! A clogged filter is the *only* thing that would cause overflows!

Edit:

Why all the thumb-downs?
She *clearly* states "The water collects behind the filter and overflows." The *only* possible cause of that symptom is that the filter is clogged and not allowing water to pass! Almost every other answer suggests the same solution.

I assume that the pump hangs on the back of the tank? If so, is it hanging level? Is it clean and clear of anything that may stop the water from flowing out? If so, then I would get a new one.

Maybe you need a new filter instead of cleaning the old one. They can get clogged up.
