I have a 10 gallon tank in my bedroom. I've had a few fish in it and an algae eater. Well my tank water has turned really green. I took everything out and cleaned it about a month ago. And its green again. Ive gone to Petco and they gave me these tablets to put in it. It helped for a lil bit, but its green again.

What could it be?

Do you know what your tank paramaters are? (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, PH)
Your tank may be overstocked, causing bad water conditions. If you don't already have a test kit, buy one. Ammonia and nitrite (most toxic to fish) levels should be 0.

A tank of that small won't hold that many fish. I'm assuming by algae eater, you mean a pleco. Plecos can reach a foot or more in length, far to big for a ten gallon. Take the pleco back to the petstore, and pick up a couple cory cats.

Also, don't ever take your tank completly down, and clean everything, then set it back up. Your taking away any good bactiera, and you are just re-cycling the tank all over again, which will cause unstable water conditions. Doing regular water changes of about 2-3 gallons every week or so and vacuming the gravel will keep your tank clear.

Does your tank get hit with sunlight? Its sounds like algae, and if its in the sun, then the algae grows faster. You have to clean it out again, and keep doing that, or move the tank and do it less often. The algae eater should keep the tank fairly clean, but you could get some snails too. Just a few, because those critters will multiply into thousands, but they will help keep your tank clean.

algae growth most likely due to high nitrates. 25% water change every week, it maybe necessary to remove & scrub the algae off of the decorations every month or so, with each water change, clean the sides of the tank with an aquarium sponge (little scrubby sponge that won't scratch the acrylic... or one for glass of your aquarium is glass) Algae is a sign of a healthy tank, but severe algae blooms can cause problems with water quality, and be an indicator of high nitrates. Get yourself a test kit that tests for ammonia, nitrites & nitrates. maintain your water quality with regular water changes, and tank maintenence. another thing you could try is instead of using dechlorinated tap water, try using revese osmosis water (available at most grocery stores, and good lfs') it has been known to reduce the algae problem in some tanks.

its algae. try keeping the light on less and get some plants like java moss that will eat up the nutrients that the algae thrive on. algae eaters don't really eat much algae -- they do when they are young. amano shrimp are better for the job.

How often are you cleaning it? It sounds like just noce a month.

Do a 25% water change every week.

Also move it away from windows, and keep the light on for shoerter periods of time.
