They need snails not to keep them from becomming ugly, but to prevent their teeth from growing so long that the fish can not eat. Puffer's teeth grow like a beavers, that is they are always growing longer and longer. They need to eat snails, or any other shelled invertabrate in order to grind down their teeth, so they don't grow so long that the puffer will starve.
Your best bet on snails is to go to a fish store. Look for a plant/s that has snails on it, then take those snails and put them in a small tank or bucket. You don't need a filter, and you don't need to change water, snails like dirty, green water. throw in some undemanding live plants, like hornwort, anacharis or java moss, and the snails will lay their eggs in it. Feed the algae wafers every 2-3 days, and eventually you will have a bucket full of snails.
What kind? You need pond snails or common ramshorns. DO NOT feed malaysain trumpet snails. They have a very hard shell, and are widely known to break a puffer's beak.
But, you may not need to, dwarf puffers do not need snails, their teeth do not grow. Depending on your other puffer, it may or may not need snails. What kind is it?
Look through here to see what kind of puffer you have.

Puffers are like beavers... Their teeth don't stop growing. You need snails and such. Most LFS will give you problematic snails (the little ones) free of charge. If your big puffer is more than 4" you'll need to provide crispy foods such as live crabs, turbo snails, etc (depending if its SW or FW). If you don't provide the snails, they will die from being unable to eat their food. Or you'll have to handle then, pry their mouths open, trim them yourself.. Which will probably stress them to death anyways.
Remember you can always ask the LFS when they do regular cleanings and show up a few days beforehand and ask for snails. Don't be a bad customer always asking for snails but never making purchases. The stores will be more likely to give you snails if you are a good customer (buying fish food from there, etc.) Besides. Puffers need stimulation and hunting for snails is the best they can get!

What kid of puffer? Most puffers teeth do not stop growing. They need to chew and will chew on coral, rock or shells to keep them filed to a normal level. These are salt water puffers. I am assuming they are fresh water puffers since very few puffers will share a tank in salt water. What ever you do, do not put Sea shells or coral into your fresh water tank. This will increase the PH above the safe limit. Rock, fresh water snail shells are cool. be careful with ceramics though since they will release toxins if cracked or broken. Snails are always a good idea in a fresh water tank and you can watch your puffers toss them around.
