One of my fancy goldfish is 4 years old! Just look after them, good filtered water, some nice plants for them to dig up and destroy (little buggers) and a good quality flake food. All my fish are at least 1 year old, and the little sorts have got so big now I have had to get a massive new tank for them!

It depends on how you keep them.
A healthy, well cared for goldfish can live from 7 to 30 years (the smaller fancies live 5-10 years, the large comets and koi can live over 30 years).
However, goldfish are some of the those abused and misunderstood fish out there. People think they can just stick them in a fish bowl, clean the water once a month, and it'll be fine. Not so; aside from being BIG fish, they produce a LOT waste - toxic ammonia. So without enough room (fancies need 15-20 gallons of water each, and larger goldfish need to live in ponds) and adequate filtration, they get ammonia poisoning.

Yes, they can last a very long time if you take good care of them. Important things to remember are to make sure they're fed properly (but not overfed), and there water in there tank is clean, "bubbled," and filtered, and not straight from your sink either! Another important thing that a lot of people don't think about is space, you need to make sure you give your goldfish plenty of space, they say at least like 2 gallons of water for every goldfish in your tank! I'd say even more than that though, I had a 10 gallon tank with only 2 goldfish in it, and they both did great, and grew quite large. They lived several years too!
You may need to by medicine for them, you can get it usually in granule form at Wal-Mart or a pet store, and it's not to expensive. Mine got kind of sick, and it helped them out immensely! Good luck, gold fish can be a lot of fun, just remember, you wouldn't want to be crowded in a small area with a bunch of people all your life, just as your gold fish don't want to be crowded in a tank with a lot of other fish all their lives! Give them plenty of room!

A home without a solid foundation will fall. pH without a solid foundation of carbonates (KH) will fall. Good goldfish care means keeping the (KH) at a safe level.
A fall in the pH of your goldfish pond or goldfish aquarium can stress your fish and if low enough can even kill them. pH is measured on a scale of 1 to 14. A reading of 7 is neutral, below 7 your water is "Acid" above 7 your water is " Alkaline". A good reading for goldfish is 7.5 or better.
The carbonates (KH) in your goldfish aquarium determine how stable your pH is. Your goldfish and your good bacteria need and use up the carbonates in your goldfish aquarium everyday. Without a good carbonate base in your water, your pH will fall below 7 and your water will be in the "Acid" range. Here at Goldfish Connection we have a pH reading of 8.4. I do not believe in lowering pH in an aged goldfish tank unless it is very high ( 9 or over ).
You can raise a pH in your goldfish pond and goldfish aquarium very quickly without hurting your fish, however, if your pH drops even two points, from 8 to a 6 (pH crash) over a few hours, your fish will become VERY stressed and could even die. note: A high pH in a new goldfish aquarium or goldfish pond with a high ammonia reading can be a problem, because ammonia is more toxic with a high pH. I still would not drop the pH, I would do massive water changes to bring down the high ammonia reading.
For good goldfish care: You want a high enough reading of KH in your goldfish pond and goldfish aquarium to maintain your pH at 7.5 or higher between water changes. If your pH is dropping below 7 between water changes you must add a buffer like our "Buff-it-Up" which contains life supporting carbonates to give your pH a good foundation of KH.

Goldfish will live 20 or more years if taken care of correctly. Unfortunatly goldfish are the most abused aquarium fish there is, and many people put them in tanks way too small and they die very young.

Goldfish can have lifespans up to 20+ years if they are fed a varied diet and housed in exceptional water conditions. They need to be in tanks that are not overcrowded. They need sufficient swimming room and do best if they are kept with their own types.
