Don't listen to these people, betta are fish compatible with many fish!
Bettas are very territorial, but only with other bettas. They are absolutely fine with other fish, provided that they aren't big enough to eat the betta, and that they don't have long fins which might be mistaken for another male betta.
So, most tetras are fine, so would kribensis cichlids, possibly dwarf gouramis, glass catfish, corydoras, platies, mollies, swordtails, endlers livebearers. As I say, you want to avoid other bettas (males will fight with other males AND with females - but 2 females together are fine) and fish with long fins like guppies, goldfish and angelfish.

The other issue you have to consider is space. Bettas ARE territorial fish. They won't attack other types of fish, but if your tank is too small, there may simply not be enough room for other fish. Anything over 8 gallons would be fine. For example, in a 10 gallon, you could have a male betta and a school of neon tetras.

Fish Compatible With Bettas

2016-10-04 23:01:16 · answer #2 · answered by smuin 4 · 0 0

We have a community tank and have always kept one male betta along with our other species of fish. We've had the tank going for several years. Some of the fish that we have with our Betta (named Samba) are:

Tetras
Platies
Freshwater Eels
Cory's
Gourami's
A White Tip Shark Catfish
Various Danio's

The only community fish so far that we ever had problems with mixing with our Betta was a male Molly who tended to be very territorial. Just make sure you don't add more than one Betta, as they may clash!

Hope this helps!

YES THEY CAN BE INTRODUCED WITH DIFFERENT SPECIES..so sick of people saying they can't...The truth is, they can, but it all depends on the individual fish. I would suggest getting the other fish for the tank anyways, and just a small tank for the betta, that way, you can put the betta in, and if he does well, then great, keep him in there.
Some possible tank mates are:
Tetras, fast moving short ones, nothing that has long flowing fins, nothing that nips.
Gold barbs are decent, the are small, fast, and don't fin nip ( at least from my experiance)
Good luck.

Here we go again... Yet another betta question with a bunch of morons claiming that bettas kill everything in sight. They obviously have never tried bettas with other fish.

Many fish will go great with bettas, just stay away from fish with long flowing fins. Fish with long fins can confuse a betta, making it think there is another betta in the tank, and then it will attack. But any fish with short fins will go great with bettas as long as they don't nip at the fins of the betta. Tetras, platys, cories, any algae eater, and snails(most of the time) are excellent tankmates for bettas.

Yes there are a few species of fish that will go along with your male betta.White cloud tetras, neon tetras, plecostomus(bottom feeder) and comet goldfish are all good bets. There are a few things you will want to watch out for- DON"T choose fish with flowing tails, the betta will rip it to shreds. DON"T put female betta with male bettas- they are only compatible with male bettas during the mating season and even then you put them in just long enough to breed them and then take the female out.PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TANK HAS PLENTY OF SPACE(LIKE A 5 GALLON TANK AT THE VERY LEAST) OTHERWISE YOUR MALE WILL GET VERY TEERITORIAL AND IT WON'T MATTER WHAT KIND OF FISH YOU PICKED CUZ THEY'LL ALL BE DEAD.

Basically what bleedseahawkblue above me said but I might as well add african dwarf frogs, shrimp and cory catfish. Cory catfish are bottom feeders and so help keep the bottom of your tank clean. You need to keep at least 2-3 in your tank but 6 is the best number. They grow between 1-3 inches depending on the type you get. I like the panda cories the best in my opinion. They grow to be 2".

It depends on the Betta. Some will kill anything you place in the tank with them, then some get along well with others. I've had 2 that did quite well in the tank with my goldfish and plecos, and they lived longer than the ones who were alone. You won't know until you try. Just be prepared to pull him out if he starts fighting.

No, not any fish. Bettas will always attack another betta. I am not sure about males and femals together, however. The males are the ones with the large tails, you would be ble to tell a male and a female apart just by looking. With other types of fish, however, such as a goldfish or something like that, they should be fine. Just be careful not to put him with anything that might eat him!
