In the past 6 to 9 months, I have twice found piles of what appear to be piles of scales in the tank where one of my Chiclids is. The fish appears to be healthy and eatting well. I've had it for more than a year and it is getting large. The first time there were multiple fish in the tank, this last time, this Chiclid was and still is the only fish in the tank.

Fish don't shed their scales, no, and they don't lose them easily. They are vital to their health.
Are you cichlids fighting? If they are ripping into each other, this may be the cause. Try moving the tank decor around to reduce territorial behaviour, and look into getting a bigger tank if your's is possibly too small.
Now that your cichlid is by himeslf, I would be concerned that he has a health problem. Does he apear to be missing scales? Check your water parameters. If ammonia is high, it may be literally burning off his scales. Anything over 0 is too high, same goes for nitrites.
Or is it possible that the pile of scales is the carcass for another fish?

Not good, fish need their scales for protection from disease. If he's loosing scales and is alone in the tank you have a problem and need to ask a pro what you should do.

he's maximum defendantly ill. Fish commonly do no longer shed there scales. i could initiate through including slowly including some aquarium salt to the tank. till you have reached 1tsp of salt consistent with gallon of water. try this over the subsequent 2 days. on a similar time i could additionally improve the temp. interior the tank to eighty tiers. for variety of seven to 10 days. you probably did no longer say if he grew to become into eating or no longer. If he continues to be eating i could feed him some medicated nutrition besides.

The only reason I have found scales in my cichlid tank is after they eat another fish.

cule_dude and brian are right... i've never seen that before. Maybe it's some kind of disease but i don't think so. Also, it could be the gravel or any decorative object you put in your tank. Sometimes theese objects can hurt the fish as it pass close to them.
