Well, in a goldfish starter kit, you will be lucky to get a year out of the fish after it's growth is done stunting.

A PROPERLY taken care of goldfish (and I am talking a lot here about them being put in the correct size aquarium and/or pond) can live to be 20+ years old!!!

Take a look at what a goldfish taken care of properly can become...

By the way, as long as you are doing the things you should be during a water change (making sure it is the right temperature and is properly dechlorinated and such) there is no such thing as changing the water too often. You can't have water that is too clean! Not possible! That would be like saying you can die early if the air you breath is too clean and there is not enough smog in it to meet your needs. Goldfish are VERY dirty fish and need their water changed more frequently... they also need far more room than any goldfish started kit could ever supply it with... they should truly rename those goldfish ender kits. Perhaps he would be happy to put a beta in that bowl instead?!?!

I won a goldfish at the local fair 9 years ago and he grew to be about 10 inches and turned solid white. He lived till just last month and died because of an illness that I couldn't get rid of. Goldfish are low maintence, but are messy fish. Goldfish can live up to 25 years and grow to be 24 inches long, if the tank they are in is big enough for them to grow that large. My best friends own a pet store and I basically live there, goldfish are my favorite!!!!

It depends on how well you take care of your goldfish. If you have at least a 10 gallon tank and you take good care of the fish, 5+ years.
