Axolotl are a species that for some reason or another has evolved to no longer leave the aqautic larval form, this is neoteny. The only way ,with good success, that I have heard of to have it continue to adult salamander form is to inject it with thyroxine or iodine to kick start the change. However, larval form axolotl typically live 10-15 years, while hormone induced rarely live past 5 years.

Lizards and Salamanders are different types of animals. Lizards are Amniotic tetrapods with specific characteristics, and Salamanders are Amphibians. They are completely different clades and therefore never cross. You COULD be thinking of a Mudpuppy (some people confuse them for other organisms) or Newts, which are technically Amphibians but spend much of their life on land before moving back into the water.

You can't. Axolotls and salamanders are totally different species. Salamanders have just evolved to become amphibious. Axolotls did not evolve, they stayed just they way they have been because it works.
