Probably aeration, since clean, fresh water is very important.

I had one gold fish last 7 years till he got old and died. Goldfish are smart and need some stimulation. It is best if he has a few other goldfish with him. Mine actually seem sad and did not eat when a tank mate died.
One thing did not know at first was that gold fish like it cold so even if you have a big tank, you do not need to heat it. In the summer keep it out of the sun. The heat will kill them.
Gold fish tend to give off allot of ammonia so an ammonia indicator is a good buy. It has saved my fish a few times. It is just a little plastic square that when it changes a colors you know you have ammonia in your tank and need to do a water change fast. Mine were in a ten gallon tank and got so big that I bough a 42 gallon tank so I my water changes were only partial not total.

Firstly, for it to be a decent size- a 3ftx12x12 will suffice as minimum for most fancy varieties, but common goldfish need something more like 4ftx2ftx2ft, or better still, a pond. Hefty filtration is a must, as is a good diet of pellets supplemented with frozen and live foods. Company, stimulation and regular water changes are a must too. Six or seven years is hardly long, as many posters seem to think- it may be aeons compared to the sad few weeks most end up living, but when goldfish hould be living fifteen years plus, it's pretty sad to see how long people think is a long lifespan.

Hmm probably food. If you forget to feed it no amount of water would save it. After you got that basic down, just changing its water every two weeks and making sure the water is chlorine free, at the right pH and not to hot or cold, your goldfish can live a long life.

make sure you clean the tank every once in a while. you don't need a filter or anything like that for goldfish. they are very sturdy and don't need treated water or anything like that so your welcome to use tap water. so basically you need water, rocks on the floor, and feed them once a day. you might want to put a little cave or something for them to hide in occasionally. if you have a single fish maybe get them a friend so they won't be lonely. you can buy feeder fish real cheap and they are just as good.

hello! goldfish are easy to take care of and easy to kill, first you need to make sure you have a large enought tank for them. get a good filter one with a bio wheel or pad will do. dont over feed, but do offer a varity of food like fresh vegetables, flake, krill, tubifex worms and believe or not they like eggs, cereal, and some fruits. (NO CITRUS FRUIT) change their water once a week 25% make sure to keep water temp the same when filling back up. also water temp is important they are cool water fish they like water between 65 and 72 my tanks and pond gets warmer it wont hurt them. goldfish with proper care can live along time. more than 20 yrs. so if your planing on having them or already do just follow these guidlines. its easy! good luck...jewels

Clean pH balanced water, oxygenate the water with bubbles, try and use a filter, don't overfeed...I do once in the morning and once at night...enough for them to eat between 3-5 minutes. Keep water temp. consistent, not freezing not too warm. When changing water add a small amount of the previous water. Try to find a place in the house that has light and is stimulating. Good Luck!

well i have had my goldfish 4about 3years now, you don't need to have a pump for goldfish, i just have little stones at the bottom of my glass tank and a fish plant as this is good for them i feed them a little tiny amount of food a day as you can over feed them and a clean them out once a week and this has done the trick ;

Proper weed not plastic as weed aerates the tank, a filter which filters any left over food (the filter needs to be cleaned out on a weekly basis) and something that gives out bubbles (I had a crocodile whose mouth opened and shut - it looked cool). I also give my fish 'frozen food' from time to time, this is things like blood worms, daphne which can be bought from some pet shops. It comes in frozen squares (keep in freezer) and the fish love it - makes a change from fish flakes.
