My goldfish, *Homer Jaelyn*, born June 28 2003, is almost 4 years old - and doing great!!

I'm really surprised that he lived this long considering he had a few near death experiences (sort of):
1. He survived a 5 day road trip in the hot car while we traveled across the country
2. He died and came back to life. (I forgot to add the solution to his water when I cleaned his tank... that caused him to float upside down for over 6 hrs... I spent the whole night flipping him over onto his stomach... a few hrs later, he was swimming again)
3. He survived 3 weeks without his tank being plugged in (we were w/o electricity do to the hurricane last year)

Besides all of that... I was just wondering, why has my fish lived this long - considering that he has been through a lot of tough things... Do most goldfish live to be 4+ yrs old? A lot of goldfish I've known were lucky to live past a few weeks... I'm really surprised he lived to be so old!! What is the oldest that a goldfish has ever lived??

The oldest living Goldfish to date was a goldfish named Tish owned by Hilda and Gordon Hand of Thirsk, N. Yorkshire, England. Tish lived for 43 years after being won at a fairground in 1956.

Goldfish can have lifespans up to 20+ years if they are fed a varied diet and housed in exceptional water conditions. They need to be in tanks that are not overcrowded. They need sufficient swimming room and do best if they are kept with their own types.

The world record for a goldfish lived to be 47 years old. and is still living born in 1960. http://www.eclipse.co.uk/wradmore/bradninch/history/goldie/goldie.htm

They can expect to live anywhere between 20-45 years. Even the ones you win at the county fair.

(Most goldfish never see this size or age) Consider this however, goldfish (certain types) can reach the 24" (that is 2 feet) long. If the fish are in a large environment like an outside pond, they can max out at 2 feet. I have 3 which are at the 14+ mark right now. (I bought them as feeders for my eel!) I liked their coloring and tossed them in the pond outside. However they can weigh in around the 10 pound mark!

Goldfish can live many years. Our goldfish George, has been through tough times and he's about six years old. He's been in a ten gallon tank for four years and he's 7inches long. I recently got a 55 gallon tank and am cycling it so he can have a new home. So take care of him and he will be a great companion for many years.

I have seen goldfish in small ponds to get up over a foot long, when they get that big they are called *Carp*.

Yes, goldfish can live longer than 4 years. I think they can live a long long time as long as they have good water, good food, and good love. You obviously love this sweet little fish. Good luck on keeping him for another 4 years, hun! :-)
