Birds - March 2007

I just acquired two lovely Polish hens. One blue/white one black/white. My first of this particular breed. They are difficult to come by here, so it may be a while before I can add a rooster. I have heaps of various colour Silky boys though. I was wondering if anyone has crossed these two particular breeds and if so, what was the outcome? As in did they turn out to be pretty birds?

Our Cockatiel is 6 months old, VERY tame, rarely spends time in his cage other than to sleep, and has been hand raised. His wings were clipped when we first got him, but we let them grow back as a birds natural insticnt is to fly, and we let him fly around our apartment. Last night he went wondering out on the balcony as the door had been accidently left slightly open, and he went under the railing, couldn't find his way back, and flew off.

Does anyone know if tame cockatiels have great survival skills? Do they normally try to find crowded places around humans or do they try to find other birds? He wasn't the best flyer, and I'm concerned other birds may attack him!

We have posted up fliers, contacted vets and animal agencies in our neighbourhood, is there anything else we can do? Also, if anyone tell me what thier natural urges are, and what they are most likely to do?

Pls if anyone can help it would be appreciated!

So far I've removed 8 eggs, 1 every 2nd day as suggested by someone. It doesn't work as the mother just keeps on laying eggs. If I shake the eggs really hard and put them back again, won't it start to smell or break easier? If I do this, can I keep the nesting box with shaken eggs for another 2 weeks? So the eggs won't rot or start to smell when they are shaken? I feel so cruel to do this, but I can't another clutch. I feel sorry for the parents.

Ideally I would like to find a breed that is a good egg layer, but that also has good meat quality. I would like chickens that are more docile than aggressive. Also, would you reccommend chicks or started pullets?

It gets really cold in Maine in the winter. Usually no colder than 15 below zero for a couple weeks in February. With the wind chill, though it can reach close to 30 below zero. We usually also get a few feet of snow. This is my first year raising chickens in my backyard and I just want to be sure they're well cared for.

I have a parakeet about a year old. When should I cover and uncover it? Does it always need to be covered?? I don't stay on a schedule, sometimes I stay up all night, and I cover my parakeet, but I'm afraid it still stays up under its cover because I am still up. Any recommendations?? When do you cover and uncover your bird??
