Hi :)

I've never owned a bird before, but I've done some research on the internet for the past month.

1.Does my parakeet need gravel/grit? (I've read both ways)
2. Are femal parakeets friendly? Will it be Ok to have 2 together?
3.How often and how do I clip her wings?

Thanks so much!!!!

My quaker parrot flew off it's cage and hit the floor so hard it bit it's tongue. I put flour on the tongue but what else should I do?

It doesn't appear to be injured, it spread it's wings and flapped when I took it to the balcony, but it won't leave the spot I put it!
The wildlife rescue says if it doesn't fly away we should euthenize it.
I can't bring myself to do that, yet I can't leave it out there to freeze, nor can I keep it, with a baby, a 2 yr old and a cat in the apartment!
Any advice would be great, thanks!

I would like to tame my baby birds but I am afraid that if I touch them when they are babies that the parents won't want to take care of them anymore and I don't know how to take care of them if the parents do stop, if I wait until they are old enough to feed themselves will it be to late? Like do you have to work at taming them before they get to a certain age? And is there anything I can do to get them used to me when they are babies without having to actualy touch them?

I have a chicken coop that is divided in middle with chicken wire. Each side is used by a different flock, each with a rooster. The one side is inhabited by a Rhode Island Red rooster and two Arucauana hens. They usually sleep inside, but I have noticed that when there is bad weather (i.e. rain, snow, ice, etc.) they sleep outside on a roost. What is up with this? The other, bigger flock doesn't do this. The rooster has lost most of the spikes on its comb from frost bite, but it still does it. Why do they do this?

I love Macaws but is there any other type of bird that is no bigger than 16 inches in height, non-aggressive, and loves to cuddle up to its person?? And that will actually have a very close bond with you, and not just like you cuz you take care of it, and will basically want just you around??

The male is in there during the day. The female at night. But, the male will come out sometimes during the day and just perch and preen with the female. Do they have to stay on the egs 24/7 or do they take little breaks?

I would like to make my own toys, houses, and nest boxes for my parakeets. Which materials are safe to use? So far I thought of a few things:
-hemp rope
-coconut shell (from grocery store)
-wood pieces (what kinds of wood and does it have to be organic?)
-birdhouse gourd or other gourds used for houses and nestboxes? Safe?

Can you suggest any other materials I could use to build stuff?
Do all the materials HAVE to be organic? Can I buy wood at the hardware store to use?

All this stuff is going into a gigantic aviary so they will have enough room, dont worry. :)

Thanks!!!

They seem to get along fine but the last two times when the african greys laid eggs they haven't hatched. I was wondering if maybe having the lovebirds nearby disturbed them? The lovebirds also have not reproduced. They have been in the same room, our family room, for about 8 or 9 months.

I inherited my Dad's cockatiel after his passing, its about 10yrs. old, it has been a male **** the first 10 yrs. of it's life...or so we thought, turns out 'HE' started laying eggs after being caged with my cockatiel for about a year and a half now. About 5 wks. ago, I found 2 eggs on the bottom of the cage, they were showing them off like crazy, but neither one of them sat on them ever, they abandoned them. They cracked them both, I eventually threw them out. Then there was nothing for 2 weeks. Then one more appeared. Another week goes by and poof!, there's another one. So right now there is 2 eggs (one from two weeks ago and one from today), in a little basket wired to the cage, with shavings and lint from the dryer. Neither one has any interest in them, which is fine by me as I am not into breeding. Just wondering what is going on, why is this happening and why do they not know what to do with their own eggs? By the way?...How does an egg get fertilized by the male?

Are the both same or is one better than the other? I have a cockatiel that has been sneezing more than usual. I was told that i could use ornacycline for this. However, the pet store only has tetracycline in my area. Are they about the same thing? Also, she is getting ready to lay eggs, is this safe for her?

I have just brought a nesting box, but am struggling to think of a place to put it. We have several bird feeders in our lilac tree, so I'm not sure if it is wise to put it anywhere near those as it might put birds off nesting altogether.

The garden is about half the size of a tennis court.

Sparrows, Blackbirds, Wrens, Robins, Coaltits and Bluetits visit the garden often to feed.

Its not acting normally like before, now it just sit and puffed all the time, its eye and nose look normal, but the dirt it excrete doesn't seem to be normal, it is only water that come out, its not like a normal dirt that usually pigeon/dove excrete.
And it ate and drink VERY few
It also move its head to the right and left side like how people disagreed.

And it has a little wound on his right wing, this is already there when I bought it, I didn't realize it has wound.
I already spread little antibiotic cream on that area of wound and maybe it would help?

Please tell me how to treat it.

I have 3 year old twins who really want a pet. My husband and I work full time, so I wouldnt want a dog as I dont think its right leaving them alone all day. My kids both love ducks and would like one as a pet, but do they make good pets? I have a garden with a pond and I think it wold be ideal for a pet duck. How do I go about getting one and will it need to have its wings clipped? There are 3 neighbourhood cats. Would they bother the duck?

I wear black a lot, I get sick of people saying wear something different.
I do contrast black a bit with another colour, What do I say to people that will not upset them. In other words, how do I tell them to mind there own business.

I can't have certain ingredients in my home, such as wheat, over Passover, and I read that parakeets can eat safflower seeds instead of their usual mix. This would be for only 8 days or so, and of course supplemented with fruits and vegetables, and spray millet. Is safflower seed ok?

Also, I can'd find any stores that carry just plain safflower seed. I called Trader Joe's, and they don't have it either.. I'm in Chicago...anyone know where I can find some? Thanks!

If this is true, then why do you think it is? Is it because you pull their babies and so they lose trust? Or??? what do you think the reasoning behind it is. Also, if you get a breeding pair that is supposed to be proven and they are tame and sweet does that mean that they probably aren't proven?
